So I just watched the 2022 one. Man what a piece of shite. Talk about all time bad decisions made constantly throughout the entire movie by the parents. So much so that by the end of the movie it was almost hard to feel sorry for them.

Spoilers

Nevermind that the dad is one of the biggest pussies ever put on screen. But there is absolutely no way in hell any rational person/parent sticks around after the “find your young daughter in the bed with your naked guests” incident. Zero. But on top of that, just time after time of over the line behavior that went ignored.

And the scene where Agnes is taken. Neither parent fought very hard to prevent that. The mom did a little but if that were to happen to my wife and I she would’ve torn apart every person in that car with her bare hands before that happened. And certainly afterwards if it were to happen. And the very last scene was almost worse. fricking run or lightly jog or do something. But nah, let’s just strip naked and stand here while we get stoned to death by a couple of psychos. Good call.

This movie wasn’t even remotely close to Funny Games (which was fairly meh) or Them/Ils (I really liked Ils).

I really wanted to like this movie, but the ending ruined it for me. The big reveal of who the killers were was just so WTF?

These kind of movies play more into the European mindset. That's why they're so frustrating to watch for Americans and probably explains why the American version of Speak No Evil was changed. I can't see an American writer or director coming up with these types of stories.

That makes sense since they are usually more passive than we are. So that seems like a logical explanation. But just the ineptness and downright child-endangering behavior of the parents in this one damn near drove me mad. It was just completely inexcusable across the board. And they had numerous chances to get the frick out of there and kept making the wrong decisions, and it cost them their daughter and their lives. So frustrating.

That was largely the point.

They're more victims than protagonists, if that makes sense.

The American version seems to make them protagonists.

Yeah you could see that’s where it was headed. And it was stupid.

Do better with your horror suggestions.

(Like The Wailing )

The problem isn't me. The supply of even good, new horror movies is low.

This is a good.

When Evil Lurks is a bit better.

Most years pass and it feels they lack even a good offering.

Off the top of my head, I can think of only 2 great horror movies the past 10 years or so. The Wailing and Hereditary.

This does remind me that I need to start working on my Halloween Horror Movie Guide
