And I disagree that South Park's always provided social commentary. The first few seasons were mostly original stories about the 4 boys, while picking on certain celebrities (Barbara Streisand). I felt that this was their "bread and butter" until the show turned into "let's make fun of what's going on in society lately."
Go back and watch "Mr. Hankey" from season 1. It's straight up a satire of PC culture.

Ehhh, maybe. But it's not as direct as the stuff they've been writing for years.

Or a riff on the HGTV remodel/flip shows.
This is what I first thought of.

They said flat out that they don't want to do more political commentary.
Pretty much every episode has had some political shite in it.

His last post is just a thread titled "Goodbye" and nothing else... kind of bizarre for him.

That's borderline political at best. It's social commentary at worst,
Following the years 2009-2016 it's difficult to distinguish between political and social agendas. They have become deliberately blurred.

This is what I first thought. Chip and Joanne may get the Trey and Matt treatment tomorrow.

The political commentary is when they are best.
No. This show is at its best when it's the kids being kids. Trey and Matt would tell you the same.

I'm pulling out my season 19 DVD right now! It's been too long since I've watched this season.

South Park has always been a political/social commentary show. I think the primary thing they've said they've wanted to get away from was the direct real-time SNL like satire of current political events in a season-long story line.

I want another Imaginationland/Black Friday type trilogy
This. The serial seasons were a nice idea and worth a shot, but their serial stories are much better told in just 2-3 parts with no filler. Those have been some of my favorites so hopefully they do more along with the solo episodes.
