Roscoe.
Not long after I started selling Advertising for a paper in Dallas, one of the top salesmen there kind of took me under his wing. He also started calling me Rosco P. Coltrane. I watched Dukes O H for the first couple of years it was on TV, but went off to college in 1977 and lost track of it. I knew him calling me that meant I was country as hell, but I never knew whether Rosco was a good or bad guy. Still not sure.

Also of note, Booke was said to be fluent in several different languages...

Yeah, he sometimes pops up on those "celebrities who are not what you think..." articles.

Came from an intellectual family in the northeast. Graduated with honors from Columbia at 19. Graduate degree from Yale. Served as a counterintelligence officer in the Korean War and was recruited by the CIA. Very worldly and spoke several languages.

But the public only knows him as Boss Hogg or Jefferson Davis (JD) Hogg.

As a kid we named a cat that hung around Roscoe P. Hottrain.

It was a female cat, and we later shortened the name to Mama Hots.

Strange that you would post this…I saw that this morning and that’s what made me think of him (Booke).

Wow, I thought it came on when I was in high school. No wonder I never knew much about it other than knowing I liked Daisy and the General Lee. By the time I got to college, I didn't watch TV until I got in bed most nights. Still do this except for sports.

Agreed. The whole cast was great. Rosco’s giggle was just great.

Sorrell Booke was the grand marshal at the Colfax Pecan Festival in 1981. He wore his white suit, chomped cigars, and stayed in character all day. He got up on the stage and let loose a big rant about locking up those danged Duke boys when he got back to Hazzard County. Great stuff.

He was one of those old school actors (this applies to pro wrestling as well) that was a character. He could easily play characters because he was one himself.

Pilot episode Rosco was a mean, hard, crooked sheriff. Didn't play well so they changed his character to the lovable, crooked goof.

Boss Hogg was a great character. So was his brother, Abraham Lincoln Hogg.

Sonny Shroyer, who played Deputy Enos, was our State Farm agent in Valdosta in the early ‘70s, before his breakthrough role as the “Idiot Convict” in the original Longest Yard.
