Snyder just got by without ruining it, but Lindelof wants to put our fears to rest with an absolute confirmation that he's going bastardize it completely: Polygon

quote:

“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago,” Lindelof writes, an approach he’s mentioned before. “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it.”

Lindelof says that he and his colleagues do not intend to make a sequel to the original story, and that in order to carry on the tradition of Watchmen, their series must be original. It must “ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens.” Therefore, the new show will be contemporary.

“[Watchmen] was specific to the Eighties of Reagan and Thatcher and Gorbachv,” he writes. “Ours needs to resonate with the frequency of Trump and May and Putin and the horse that he rides around on, shirtless. [...] Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising, yet familiar set of eyes... and it is here where we’ll be taking our greatest risks.”

Oh frick you, Damon Lindelof! Can I please turn on my TV without seeing Donald Trump on the screen? Reagan and Gorbachv weren't even really a major part... wait a moment Nixon was the President in Watchmen. I guess they can't leave well enough alone.

quote:

In [our writers’] room, Hetero White Men like myself are in the minority,” he writes, “and as Watchmen is (incorrectly) assumed to be solely our domain, understanding its potential through the perspectives of women, people of color and the LGBTQ community has been as eye-opening as it has been exhilarating. We’ve committed to doing the same in front of and behind the camera. And every single person involved with this show absolutely adores Watchmen.”

Yeah, just what I want to see, another "frick you, you're a white male" show. frick Martin Luther King! I need to judge my writers by the color of their skin and not the content of their character. This is just the worst.

Watchmen was ruined a few years ago when that abortion of a movie came out.

I guess I’m the only person who likes the Watchmen movie.

Some dude at the premiere came in with a Rorschach costume, moving mask and all, and threw a pyro ball into the sky right when the lights went off. The place went insane.

There's redeeming qualities about it, and that's because Zack Snyder fortunately ripped it off without bringing anything new to the table. The Dr Manhattan backstory was amazingly well done. I'll give Snyder mad props for that scene.

It came out too early. The whole superhero team movie genre was just starting to ramp up and Watchmen came out to deconstruct it. The trailers made it look like an action-packed blockbuster. I was sorely disappointed in it when I saw it in the theater.

Watched the extended edition (the medium length one) a few years ago and thought it was amazing.

It was just about as good as I could have hoped for honestly. The ending of the comic just wasn't going to work. And in the comic, they should have made more than one alien and also attacked Moscow as well as a few other cities. I somewhat like the change, but I do see the problem with Dr Manhattan himself being blamed for it.

I actually think the narrative structure of the movie makes more sense than the comic books.

The biggest issue is just that the internal dialogues and turmoil are much harder to convey by film.

What, for the direct acknowledgement he's destroying Watchmen? I've gone on much worse rants than this.
