Former ESPN star Jemele Hill is moving into scripted television and has teamed with Gabrielle Union to develop a half-hour comedy series about Black women with financial independence.

New Money, which is based on a story from Hill and The Undefeated journalist Kelley Carter, who run Lodge Freeway Media, is in development at Showtime.

The show is centered around Black women who have solidified their careers, achieved financial independence and moved past the awkwardness and money struggles of their twenties. Now firmly in their 30s, the ladies must deal with the repercussions their “new money” brings, including hangers-on, false friends, unwanted media attention, and greedy relatives– while also navigating the treacherous world of dating.

Good luck, Showtime

A “sequel” to Girls? Just what the pop culture masses have been clamoring for.

*ETA: to clarify. given that premise and who is creating this show, good luck at making it funny.

Jemele Hill is among the least funny and personable in sports media

I’m sure this will do great.

never heard of it until 1 minute ago. it this accurate?

quote:

Modern-day black women might be described as strong and confident; in other words, just the opposite of Issa and Molly. As the best friends deal with their own real-life flaws, their insecurities come to the fore as together they cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmor

if so, i imagine the big difference will be that Jemelle's show will not have much insecurity and it's everyone else that's "wrong"

Wait, black women are able to achieve financial independence in the most racist country in human history?

Has anyone ever failed up better than this woman? Everything she touched at ESPN went to crap.

That is a very generous description of Jemele Hill.

Frick Jemele, but can we get Cari Champion?

She is fine as hell, even if she is associated with Jemele.

Pretty much. The dating troubles of 30-ish black women will be real similar.

yeah that's the whole thing. you can create a comedy if you allow the main characters to have major flaws and make mistakes

the whole point of this show seems to want to put them on a pedestal. why would Hill allow them to become the joke? i just don't see it working out
