I love Seinfeld, but those first 2 seasons are just awful. Aside from 1 or 2 episodes, I don’t even enjoy rewatching them. I am surprised the show lasted long enough to see season 3, where it really starts to take off.

What are other good examples of shows that start really slow but go on to be great?

Seinfeld was going to be my choice when I saw the thread title. If I see reruns on TV and its a S1 or 2 episode I don't watch.

Parks and Rec is another, although in retrospect years later, season 1 is fine.

Does the first 3 episodes of Black Sails count as a 'bad first season'?

Halt and Catch Fire comes to mind

The Leftovers sort of as well

Black Sails somewhat too.

came in here to say this. i watched it a few years back and it's my favorite.

i let my oldest watch it with me this last year and he wanted to bail on the first season. they tried to hard to recreate Michael Scott with Leslie, but then settled her out after that.

I disagree with both of you. Seinfeld S1 only had five episodes and P&R only had six. That is somewhat common for new shows trying to find their way. Both had some solid episodes and P&R year one was excellent. The Banquet where Leslie gets the man haircut and everyone thinks Ann is her girlfriend is hilarious. Mark banging Shauna Malwee-Tweep in The Reporter was also great. P&R year one was second best year ever. The show jumped the shark pretty early by making the characters too silly and the episodes too over the top.

may not count since "reality" but, Big Brother's first season was incredibly bad. Was pretty good for maybe 10 seasons after that. then went to shite again.

i disagree. they made them over the top to begin with, then settled them down. Craig and Andy are the only ones they really let be over the top after that. you could also argue for John Ralphio, Jamm, and Tammy 2, but they did them all in small doses like Creed.

my favortie thing was they took Ron just being a cranky boss and leslie being over the top annoying and found a good way to lean into a staunch libertarian vs. do gooder liberal and make it endearing.

I came here to say this. Similarly, I'd say The Office. The pilot episode basically aped all of the original UK's Ep 1 version.

The intentionally gave Michael Scott bad hair, an oversized suit, etc. in order to make him unlikable character, like Ricky Gervais.

Didn't really become funny until "The Dundies."

I couldn't believe it when I read this. For years, I thought Steve Carrell had a hair transplant after he started getting bigger in the office. I had no idea his hair was always fine and they purposely made it look like it was falling out.

I will agree with Parks & Rec. I watched the first season after watching later seasons. It's jarring how different some of the characters are with the most being Andy. I was so used to him being a lovable guy. It's weird how unlikeable he is in season 1.

It’s not terrible but they really found their stride in season 2 increasing the role of Ron and Andy.
