Letters from Iwo Jima is fantastic and the closest you’ll get.
I’ve watched that already and it’s gangster as hell. One of the most underrated movies in the modern era

Serious question: Does it check off all of the DEI requirements?

How is that a serious question?

By my count, everybody except one person is a minority. I'm pretty sure they hit their numbers.

Sadly Asians don’t count.
Since a vast majority of them are successful, they don’t fit the narrative.
Only blacks and gays/alphabet people count toward diversity.
There were already liberal articles about “where are the black samurai?”. They don’t care for this show, although I don’t know that FX is beholden to any quotas like Amazon etc.

I suppose you are talking about Blackthorne but what about the Dutch sailors and the Portugese? Are they minorities now? Also, it takes place in Japan so the English, Dutch and Portugese are the minorities as depicted. You are going by snowflake American standards so they needed some black folks and lgbtq.

It’s amazing how often the ones triggered by the DEI requirements have no idea how the requirements actually work.

As I recall, I believe that period pieces are subject to more relaxed rules relative to "on screen" talent.
I do recall a number of episodes were directed by women.

I picked up the book after watching the series. Only about a third of the way through as it's a massive book. The book is, uh, explicit in some areas
I think I like Book Blackthorne more than Show Blackthorne. He's much smarter in the book. Maybe that's just because we get internal monologue in the book.

Show Blackthorne is an idiot. Toranaga himself says he only keeps him around because he amuses him.
Book Blackthorne was a worthy foil for Toranaga. Book Toranaga keeps him around because Blackthorne was a leverage point against the western powers and could help him in the future build a navy.

I picked up part 1 and 2 and read them over a 3 week period. I finished part 2 right before the finale.
Enjoyed both, but the book was definitely better.

Started this last night and finished the first 2 episodes. I'm loving it like everyone else, but I don't understand Ishido's plan with letting Yabushige rescue Blackthorn from his execution.
He wants to kill Toranaga so badly he caved to the Christian Regents and agreed to Blackthorn's death, but then he allows him to be rescued and returned to Toranaga?
What?

I tried watching this a few months ago. I would watch it at night after my wife fell asleep and the edibles had kicked in. That was a bad idea because I would either fall asleep or not really remember what happened. I tried to start up where I left off a couple weeks ago (Episode 4) and had no memory of what happened.
I got a little sick this week so I started Monday night with Episode 1 and finished Episode 10 last night. Fantastic show. I would get confused a lot trying to remember which character did what, and sometimes why, so I would often pause and have to look up stuff. Would have been way easier tracking this thread after each episode! Reading through it today either showed me stuff I missed or reinforced things I thought.
One thing that surprised me about this thread is how little discussion of the prisoner being boiled alive there was. I can watch a lot of sick stuff and not be really bothered. I don't know if it's because I was sick for that episode, but his screams being dragged to the pot haunted me all week. Something about knowing you're about to die in one of the most horrible possible ways resonated with me.
Also saw there's a Season 2. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. I did watch some of the behind the scenes stuff and saw that the actor playing Toranaga is a main producer and one of the most respected actors from Japan. I think he's also an expert on that era down to clothes, customs and even the way they walked/moved. They showed how he would film his scene, then take off his wig and costume and go straight to advising on another scene. His (and the other experts the show used) continual involvement will be a huge positive. I will start watching Season 2 the day the first episode is released.

That was so bad. And they were so nonchalant about it. Like “yep, gotta boil this dude alive…”

And then after your mate is boiled alive, "Here's the guy that boiled him. You're on his team now."

I mean, that's basically how it happened in the book. Some of his vassals weren't all that comfortable with it, but yes they just moved on as that was just one of his odd quirks.
Blackthorne did not move on and he never forgot that or that he was pissed on. He never really acted on it but he never forgave or forgot. That was something he kept to himself and it wasn't something the show could get into.
Point is, it wasn't quite as dismissed as the show made it out to be (but it wasn't that big of a point either).
