She believed he was dead. And he's a serial abuser.

The whole message of this story is the concept of sacrifice for the greater good. That the needs of the many, or nation, outweigh the needs of the one.

Hiromatsu

I 100% believed that Hiromatsu agreed with Toranaga's plan and it was his honor to serve his lord by committing supuku. Hiromatsu specifically ordered his son to continue to support Toranaga after he completed his task as a second. It was the only way that Toranaga could convince Ishido that he truly gave up. In Hiromatsu's eyes, he is giving his life for his lord, his family, his clan and Japan.

You could tell that Toranaga did not want Hiromatsu to commit supuku, but he had to let him. Few episodes before they were both joking about how important it was to choose a good 2nd so it does not take 9 swings to do the job. That tells me they discussed the scenerio.

Holy shite.

I read the book back in college (late 80's) and so I have forgotten a lot of the details. This last episode was INCREDIBLE.

And since we have a spoiler tag I'll say, I did not remember Mariko getting blown the frick up in the book.

This is going down as one of the best series in history.

Wait…

So Yabushige is playing both sides?

It was hard to see everything going on in the dark

Yabushige

He's a ratfrick traitor opportunist. He's been looking for a way to jump off the Toranaga train since day one.

He's been playing both sides since the first episode. He approached Ishido when they were first in Osaka (before Lord Toranga left the first time when he resigned the council) about the cannons he now had.

she was absolutely blown the f up in the book, they just have elevated her role a bit more in the series (not a bad thing) so she's more of a prevalent character.

Wow.

The show has been so good that I am now listening to the book on Audible. It's great when I'm doing chores, driving, or fishing. I forgot how much history the book goes in to.

Same. The scene with her trying to leave was some of the best tv I’ve seen in a while. They knew full well what was about to go down but each went out honorably. Great stuff.

So I have to ask the question. Is she dead? I am thinking there is no way she can survive that.
