Wife and I tuned I for the first episode thinking it was a pirate show.

It isn’t Black Sails that’s for sure.

They do show a map briefly in one of the early orphanage scenes, but I had to look one up.

I didn’t think the show was bad, but I also didn’t think it was awesome. Good enough that I enjoyed watching it, not good enough for me to be waiting anxiously for a season 2. The universe is interesting but not captivating. Kind of “meh” to everything.

I think part of the issue is that the two most interesting things about the universe seem to be the Fold and the Grisha, and they fleshed both of them out fairly quickly. I haven’t read the books so I have no idea how it compares, but I think a little more mystery and wonder would have gone a long way.

Speaking of romance, I was really starting to dislike Alina. Falls for the first tall, dark and handsome general she crosses paths with.

That part of the show reminds me of Outlander. I started watching it when there was more time travel stuff, going back and viewing history, etc... but soon bailed when it became evident that it was a romance show disguised as a fantasy show.

I hope there's more events and story to this show than just Mal and Alina, will they or won't they, and when.

It did have a few issues, they throw a lot at you in the beginning just overloading you with the background, and the last episode of season 1 you need to watch at night with all of the lights out. It's as bad as that episode from Game of Thrones where most of the episode is too dark to see the fight.

No where near as bad as that GoT episode. On the same tv with both and no problems with Shadow and Bone for me, GoT though was dark as hell.

I’m on ep 3, and so far I’m enjoying ot. But as others have said, it takes too long to start to get a feel for things. They don’t give enough explanation or back story to know what’s what and why. Some narration would go a long way.

This is where I am with it. They didn't give us enough backstory before pressing forward with the story. I'm really lost and trying to figure it out. Lead actress is easy to look at as well as the hot magician that propositioned Mal.

I enjoyed it. By the way, there was a map in like the first 10 seconds of the show starting, so it gave you an idea of where things are.

4 episodes in on this and we are enjoying it

the world building is intriguing enough, even with some weak characters and somewhat cringey acting at times

I watched the whole season last weekend and enjoyed it, overall. But what I quoted of your post is absolutely my biggest complaint and it's more than just the last episode. I cannot stand that. Do these editors not do their job? You can't tell me not one editor or someone from the VFX department watched that and didn't say, "You think we should make it brighter? I literally can't she anything going on."

But aside from that, I really enjoyed it and will watch if they make another season (which I assume is definitely going to happen as the source material is a trilogy book series from my understanding). I would like to get more in depth on the background of each "state" and the previous wars and such. I may pick up the books and see if they have more along those lines.

Could use more sex, violence, edge, and adult content.

GoT had all that, and still ended up a dumpster fire.

Good character development and story telling doesn't NEED that stuff.

not that it's directly correlated, but GoT started it's downhill slide when they dropped the sex, edge, adult content around season 6. it's obviously more related to the lack of source material, but just saying.

On episode 6. I hate alinas character. She is such a bitch.

ETA: TD censored count so I wanted it to be visible and understood what I meant

I've noticed most new shows will go heavy on the sex/ violence for shock value, then ease off once the audience is hooked.

Shadow & Bone did well to avoid all graphic sex stuff... I suspect we'll get a steamy scene next season, but maybe not.

I feel like I finally have a handle on what’s going on. Only took to episode 5.

agree x1000

I'm about 3 episodes in, and it's difficult to care too much about where we're going with these characters, if I dont know how we got here first.

I'm still not 100% sure who's east, west? Who are the factions? Why are they fighting?

I thought it was fairly easy to follow even if I don't remember the specific names of the places. The big shadow place cut the country in half and there are tensions as to whether it's still one country. The king is on the side where the main characters are. The other side is a little more lawless it seems. You can travel through the shadow place but it might kill you.

There's and East vs West war incoming and perhaps a powered people vs non powered people war too.

To me it's hard to figure out the motives of everyone.

I don't wanna discuss as I dunno if this is a spoilers thread.

I can't tell if the Grisha are a race or a county or what. I mean, they seem like magical beings, but sometimes they're spoken about as a 'people '.
