We literally saw this in season 1.

that is such an awesome scene, from an awesome show. per usual our Americanized version of history education didn’t teach us about anything fun, and this show is the sole reason I dove into pre-unification England.

First King of England was gay, just like Longshank son in braveheart was gay. It is what it is, I do like how in the show that the writers show that the Viking Religon was the true religon as your Uthred saw actual vahalla where as all the faithful christian saw nothing.

It was also harped over and over again how the Christian people were weak and only with the Vikings and their true gods could they win.

*** Potential Spoilers***

The change of Aethelstan from season 5 to this movie really bugged me. This is a guy who shook off his father's orders to side with Uhtred suddenly turning into a murderer of those closest to him and then right back? Sloppy. I did think the battle and ending were well done, but the movie really lost a lot of the character driven storybuilding of the show. It was just too much to shove into a movie, so it wasn't as strong a wrap-up as this wonderful show deserved, but it was ok.

Hate it's over. The Last Kingdom is easily one of the greatest shows of this millennium.

ETA: DAMN THEM for no Eadith!

It’s not certain he was really gay and even if he was, I don’t remember it being mentioned in the books.

I must be getting slow because it took me about a minute to figure out “TLK” was The Last King. I guess I should have just clicked the link.

No, you are not slow. And, I don't think I am, either. But, so many posters on this site simply PIIOTTTBAITTLTTOTFN. (Put Initials Instead Of Typing The Title Because, Apparently, It Takes Too Long To Type Out The Full Name). I concede, though, that there are others who somehow KEWTPM (Know Exactly What The Poster Means).

Alfred was in the real heaven with Jesus. That was actually the deceiving entrance to hell.

It was good to see the characters again, but I thought it had a lot of flaws. It was WAY too rushed. I have no idea of the name of the person who invaded and united the six kings. They didn't do any background hardly on him/his daughter, and poof, they are a main character and have united the realm. The way they made Athelstan turn against Uhtred, after he raised, taught, and defended him was very forced. It didn't make any sense in the context of the movie. It needed a lot more time to build if they were to make it believable. They made Athelstan gay, which was a wtf moment. They at least mentioned Uhtred's other son, but not his daughter? It just felt very rushed, which was frustrating. They could have done a lot more with what they had. The final scene was nice, but they couldn't spring for Ragnar to be there? Probably a scheduling conflict, but they do have CGI. With this being the final offering from this cast/show, I just wish they would have done a little more. It was an awesome series that deserved better than what we got.

Was this top notch quality compared to the show? No it was not. That being said I still enjoyed it as a fun wrap up. As for the gay villain Aethelstan plotline I was a little surprised they went that route but then again a reoccurring theme of the show was the royal family being indebted to Uhtred, then completely screwing him over the following season so I guess they stayed consistent with that . I think the biggest disappointment is that Uhtred didn't end up humping Edward's widow. The Uhtred I know would have done that by the second act.

Also that battle scene was wild. The swine wedge, the log-dozers being pulled by the horses. That was just plain fun.

Correct but the easiest way to manipulate men is by getting them to think with their dicks. This king liked dudes so it makes sense that his judgement would be clouded as horribly as it was for a piece of arse.

Sure they maybe could have done the same thing with a woman advisor but I don't think a king would listen to a woman as much as he would a man.

I don't think the 7 kings were out of no where. We already knew about the Scots, Welsh, and Irish. We also knew that Utred was the king of North Umbria and that Edward was king of Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia. We also knew that Edward had 3 sons and one would inherit the throne.

Thats 5 kingdoms right there.

I know that.

I bet if you asked Cornwell, he’d tell you that as nice as that last scene was, it was still all in Uhtred’s mind, and it would have been fine having Alfred in the scene because of that.

Aethelstan was an actual historical figure with multiple wives and more than 10 children. Season 5 wrapped up with zero indication of this character being gay and his being raised completely apart from his father and particularly by Uthred gives no indication that he's suddenly going to... ***spoilers***

...let a spy manipulate him via a homosexual relationship to the point he kills his half brother, one of his closest friends and advisors and then jumps into an idiotic war out of the blue. It makes even less sense that when he learns he's snowed, he suddenly reverts back to the season 5 character and all is forgiven. Relative to the show, the way this movie handled Aethlestan is awful and completely out of left field. The remainder of the movie is decent, but that part really took it down several notches.
