Of course
this
involes
spoilers
for
anyone
who
might
not
have
seen
the
movie:
The scene in The Sand Pebbles when Steve McQueen has to shoot his only friend, a Chinese Coolie he trained to work on the ship's engine, to save him from being tortured by the the Chinese Nationalists.
As a kid, I couldn't imagine having to kill a friend, but the other Chinese guys were going to kill him anyway. They were just making sure he was going to die slowly and painfully.
In that movie, McQueen did everything the right way, even if it wasn't the Navy way. His character lost everyone he cared about and led a very lonely life bacause of his actions.
I was only five or six years old when I saw it. My dad thought it was a rah, rah type army mvoie.
He knew my two older brothers and I loved those movies so he took us.
I could tell he was upset that I saw that kind of thing at such a young age.
He probably thought it was like The Great Escape where the Germans were doing the unbelievable killing.

Jenny and Forrest after they got soaking wet and went back to her dorm room. Jenny on stage playing guitar naked.
I saw that with my parents and was really embarrassed.
I was 34 years old but I had never seen THAT with THEM.
I would still be embarrassed to see it with them today and I'm 52 years old.
