Saving Private Ryan

Flipping channels this afternoon and see it on. Can't go past it...I'm compelled to watch it again for probably the 20th time if not more. As I'm watching it I can't but wonder what awards it won...surely Tom Hanks won best actor and the film won best film...but no.
Shakespeare in love won best picture. Who here honestly stops and watches SIL if you even see it on any channel? Who here would list SiL as even a top 100 film of all time?

Did a study abroad on WWII in Europe. We toured Normandy and on the day we visited Omaha, we watched the opening beach scene in the coach with the shades down and, when it was over, we got off the bus and went down to the beach.
It’s a public beach these days, with some of the defenses still in place.

By far. But he got to be redeemed after getting his buddy killed.
Check for theaters around you (usually non AMC/Cinemark theaters like Alamo/Star Cinema grill) around Memorial day. They've rescreened SPR two out of the last three years or so. I didn't get to see it in the theater when it was originally released.

You don’t see great movies in bunches as much anymore. It’s what people said in the 80’s when talking about the great 70’s movies.
In ‘95 Forrest Gump beat out Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption.

I hated Upham for a long time but as I got older, I understood the depth of the character more. Upham never hid what he was, he was a desk jockey and told Miller as much the very first time they met. He was not remotely a person who needed to be in the middle of an excursion like the one to find Ryan and was a liability from the get-go. Did he completely fold under pressure, yes he did. Did he ever pretend that he wasn't exactly what he was? No, you knew what you were getting with Upham. There had to have been at least one other person somewhere on that beach that could interpret and had seen combat but Miller settled on Upham. Miller basically selected a known liability to take on an extremely dangerous trek across Nazi occupied Europe.

I never saw Shakespeare in Love, but I hated Thin Red Line. I've tried watching it a couple of times, and it just falls flat for me.

I understand it's Spielberg speaking to the audience, but Miller was kind of a dick when he tells Ryan to earn this. Ryan basically has to live the rest of his life with the knowledge that 6 guys died to save him, when he didn't even want to be saved in the first place. That probably weighs heavily on a person.

The crazy thing about that year is that all five films nominated for Best Picture were period pieces. That had only happened once before (1962) and hasn't happened since.

Why did they even need an interpreter? They're looking for an American soldier. Are they planning to ask the Germans if they've seen him?
