Haven't you kids ever seen Rudy? A little fireplug of a never-say-quit at Notre Dame. He died of cancer after the big game I think.

I've seen this mentioned quite a bit for most unsettling / saddest movie. I just don't see how an animated movie can get that type of reaction. Sure, there are plenty of animated movies that have sad moments. But for people to put it as the saddest ever blows my mind.

Well, it's partially based on a true story, only instead of the brother dying he lives through it and wrote about it. That is not a spoiler due to it being the opening line.

What is it that makes it so sad? I'll likely never see it.

You watch a toddler and a teen starve to death for an hour and a half. That's the literal movie. It's depressing as hell.

You could devalue a live action movie saying, "Well, it's just actors playing characters. It's not real"

Admittedly I'm a big fan of animated films/anime. If you allow yourself to get into the story it can become just as real as any other type of movie.

The sad moments in this movie aren't Disney movie sad.

Nobody Knows, a Japanese film from 2004 about abandoned children, is extremely sad. My wife cried for a long time afterwards, and was angry at me for taking her to see it.

Patch Adams. Just saying it starts up the old feels.

Another Robin Williams movie, What Dreams May Come is up there for me too.

There's a movie called Princess that's half animated and half live action that is totally fricked up and absolutely heart wrenching. It is a pretty genius film, but it will mess with you big time.

I don't think this is the saddest movie I've ever seen, in part because it's just so damn beautiful and ultimately joyous in its look at life and death, but the Fountain puts me close to tears every time I see it. That movie is fricking brilliant.

The Green Mile was tough to watch at the end.

When I was a kid, Project X w/ Matthew Broderick made me cry at the end too. But I htink those were happy tears maybe?

All Mine To Give

Based on a true story of an immigrant Scottish family in 19th century Wisconsin. This family suffered great misfortune, more than most immigrants. It made me aware of how much many of the people who built this country sacrificed while trying to make a life for themselves and their families.
