The scene when Mrs. Goldfarb's apartment mates see her after shes been committed and are weeping on the bench outside is probably the most sad and real a movie has ever been

Reign on Me with Adam Sandler. Had that been played by someone else, it would have been more a lot more popular and saddening.

Though it's a primarily a comedy, "Click" also has it's really sad moments. This one always puts a lump in my throat:

The scene in Warrior where Nic Nolte falls off the wagon and is listening to Moby Dick. Cried like a child the first time I saw it.

Private Ryan.

What Dreams May Come. First time I saw that was on HBO. Robin Williams had died a couple months before, and my son was only about 2 years old. That movie is gut wrenching. Eulogy scene is near unwatchable with anyone else in the room.

American Sniper also had a dead silent crowd out of the theater.

And to the OP, I think Mel's pre deployment speech is one of the most underrated speeches in cinema.

Okay I need someone to explain this to me.

I've seen this mentioned quite a bit for most unsettling / saddest movie. I just don't see how an animated movie can get that type of reaction. Sure, there are plenty of animated movies that have sad moments. But for people to put it as the saddest ever blows my mind.

What is it that makes it so sad? I'll likely never see it.
