Rocky IV is on. Why didn't the ref stop the fight on the 1st?

It has been forever since I've seen this movie.
No way should that fight have made it past the 1st round. The ref didn't even give Rocky a standing 8 count despite the arse beating he was getting
And the 2nd round may have been worse until Rocky got in a lucky shot and cut Drago. Then Rock went with the cheap shot and got a double leg takedown at the end of the round
I would love to see the compubox stats after the first 2 rounds of that fight

It was a non-sanctioned fight in Russia. The rules weren't exactly followed to a tee.

I wish real boxing matches were as good a Rocky boxing matches.

The one to really wonder about was the Creed/Drago fight. Why the hell didn't that ref step in and save Apollo? He either should've ended it after the 1st or definitely when Apollo got in trouble against the ropes in the 2nd. In the words of Duke: THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE...AN EXHIBITION!!! *as spit flies.

Which makes the ref's non-involvement in the Rocky/Drago fight even more puzzling. Drago had just killed a man in the ring and the ref stood by and let the murdering happen. If nothing else, Duke or Pauly should have thrown in the towel during that first round

I blame it on post-Cold War U.S./Russia tension and prejudices. It's on Russian soil, so the match was on Russian terms.

The Cold War was still going on when the fight happened. In fact Rocky helped America win it.
The rules are different in Soviet Russia for boxing. There would be noway Rocky's corner was gonna throw in the towel while Rocky was still standing.

Another theory I've always had about both the Rocky/Drago and the Creed/Drago fights are that maybe the refs in those respective fights just didn't have the balls to step in and stop legends of Creed's and Rocky's statures.
It's like Richard Green in the Ali/Holmes fight: Even though everyone could see that Ali was getting absolutely slaughtered and Holmes was even begging him to stop before he killed him, he didn't have the balls to stop a legend like Ali in presumably his last fight. Who dares stop a legend who has risen against impossible challenges so many times before? That's a heavy burden. It's entirely possible that the refs in the two Rocky IV fights fell victim to the same trepidation that seemed to paralyze Richard Green just 4 or 5 years prior.

the beatings in those movies was totally ridiculous and over the top, a real fight would have been stopped immediately, that's hollywood for you!

Drago would have ended up in jail in real life. The ref tried to stop the Apollo fight at one point and Drago pushed him away, then landed the killer blow.
If he dies..... Drago gets 20+ years in prison.
