That's pretty much because he had a script to follow and directors didn't let him have free reign

Some good movies. He just wasn’t my brand of comedy.
Feel exactly the same. The comic stuff was rapid and not that funny to me. Had some great parts in movies. Seems like the Goodwill Hunting roll was written perfectly for him. Superb.

Yeah, right.

Bicentennial Man fricked me up big time when I saw it as a ten year old
To this day, I still have trouble watching Hook in a completely objective manner. I loved it so much as a kid, and as I got a little older it really touched home for the father/son factor that Spielberg had in the movie, that I hold this movie is so much higher regard than it's actually worthy of. I didn't really appreciate Good Will Hunting until I was in my 20's, but it truly is on another tier.
His comedy may not be for everyone, and he does come off like a coke-fueled addict(which he was most of his younger days), but he really did have an amazing career as an actor. I just think he was really self-conscious to the point of becoming an addict, yet he was also really good at what he did and maybe the booze and coke did help him at times(similar to King's best work being written when he was a pill fiend). His death was definitely one of the hardest celeb deaths I have lived through, so sad.

He and Nathan Lane were tremendous in the Birdcage

"Only got worse when J.Winters made an appearance": Pam Dawber has said, may times, before & after his death, that the whole crew loved those appearances. None of it was rehearsed & when they would take off, "we would just stand back in amazement". Curious, for those who did not like his style, whose style do you like / prefer? Not a movie but his HBO New Years Eve Special was a 2 hr non stop comedy classic. My opinion.

My favorite Robin Williams character is Rainbow Randolph from Death to Smoochie. He really played into the dark comedy well and embraced every bit of his character.

One Hour Photo was one I was surprised at his role. It’s been a long time but remember it being very good.

I was going post What Dreams May Come...movie is visually stunning and well acted. Robin is so damn good in that movie

It's an unpopular opinion but I thought he was an astounding actor but one of the most cringey trying too hard comedians I've ever seen
Agree. When he was just acting, he was great (World According To Garp, The Survivors, The Best Of Times,Awakenings, Fisher King One Hour Photo), but when he was just doing his ad lib comedy routine he sucked pretty bad(Good Morning Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire, Aladin,Patch Adams).

I was actually going to post this movie. It wasn’t a comedy per se; however, it had funny moments. Nevertheless, Williams was phenomenal in that role. He absolutely nailed the loner, solitude, creepy stalker.
I also loved him in Patch Adams. That was another role that doesn’t get much attention.

He stole the show in Death to Smoochy. I’ve always wondered how him and Ed Norton got along on set. I guess it didn’t matter since they didn’t share the screen very often. I just would peg them as being polar opposites in their approach to acting.
But I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard when Norton pulls out that cookie that looks like a dong in front of those kids and he’s trying to explain what it is.

Death to Smoochy may not be his best but it was a great role for him at the time and brought him back to relevance in comedy. That was a great movie and he was perfect in the role.

Williams over the top antics on stage with some of his stand-up was more irritating to me than funny. Not all of it mind you, but a good deal of it, especially when being interviewed and going on 5 minute adlib rambles.
As for comics I like and have liked since some of them are now dead are:
George Carlin
John Pinette
Richard Jenni
Doug Stanhope
Chris Rock
Bill Burr
and of course, Richard Pryor

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Awakenings. It was easily one of his best roles as a dramatic actor.
He and Robert De Niro both step outside of their traditional roles to put on stellar performances in a great movie.
Julie Kavner (the voice for Marge Simpson) plays a romantic interest for Robin Williams’ character.
