Serendipity, my friend.
He was originally cast and set to play Woodrow in Lonesome Dove. But his wife at the time told him he was an idiot and would regret it for the rest of his life if he didn’t take the part of Augustus.
Obviously, I’m a huge fan of Lonesome Dove and have gone down my fair share of rabbit holes regarding it’s making and impact. That being said Mr. Duvall was an icon whether or not he ever portrayed the indomitable Augustus McCrae…but by God I’m sure glad he did.
I just found out today he was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee.
TCM - Robert Duvall

Died peacefully at home, surrounded by love.

This one hurts. Maybe my favorite actor, if not then top 5. I really thought he should have won the Oscar for best actor in the Apostle.

What did they do with Gene Hackman? Should expect something similar.

Duvall was also genuinely interested in tango, and was married to an Argentinian woman 40 years younger than himself.

For my money, the best American actor ever.
He was the cowboy Shakespeare.
Kilgore is is apex. But The Apostle is his masterpiece.
