I read the article, and it doesn't seem bad at all. I don't see the fuss, unless it's just to complain for the sake of complaining.

Tolkien purposely made Tom’s background ambiguous and mysterious.

Amazon woke writer: "So, we were brainstorming after the failure of a first season and thought to bring in a character all of the diehard fans could appreciate. We certainly heard the unwarranted and sexist and some could say bigoted complaints loud and clear on YouTube and X. We took it as a challenge to our ego and intelligence so that's when all of us in the writer room tasked ourselves with doing some deep research on Tolkien lore by reading spark notes and a few wiki summaries. And that's how we came to know about Tom. We know Tom is an ambiguous and mysterious character, so we thought...what better way to highlight and give depth to Tom than to make him non-binary and they/them?"

He's purposefully left mysterious by Tolkien (I have my own thoughts of who I think he is)

I enjoy reading the theories in these types of threads. Give us those thoughts if you have the time!

Then...don't watch the show, easy answer!

I did more than just not watch, I cancelled my subscription to Amazon Prime.

August 17, 2022. After being a member since 2007.

I've not renewed my membership. Still haven't watched 1 ep of RoP. Never will.

People need to stop pretending they liked this garbage. 37% retention rate of viewers proves no one cares.

In this thread we will have people complaining about every detail of a show they swear they won’t watch a second of but will spend hours reading articles and watching videos about it.

Most of y’all deserve the misery you create for yourself.

Get the story behind him? That’s mutilating it. Tolkien purposely made Tom’s background ambiguous and mysterious. There’s nothing these crop of activist writers @ Amazon can do that can add to or enhance Tolkien’s characters.

Going to agree with this take right here.

The character needs no explanation.

Tom Bombadil is perpetually happy. Why does he look so serious and somber in these pictures? Tom Somberdil.

You know, now that they have Tom Bombadil in it, I’m going to give this show a chance. It’s got to be great now… OK I can’t lie for that long..

What part of season 1's reception made them think they can pull this off

It took me a total of about 50 seconds to read and post this article.

Y'all are going to downvote any post that gives this show a chance, that's plainly a given

I'm as frustrated as anybody by the direction season 1 took.
I'm also a huge Tolkien fan, that wants it to turn around and succeed, so I CAN watch and enjoy it.

I swear some of you want nothing to be good, and will watch nothing new. I don't have that same opinion, I'm not wanting to hate anything.

I watched Nerd of the Ring's video on this, and as he does point out, they're not going to try to explain him in any way Tolkien didn't. And it's also mentioned that while overall the tone of the season will be darker than season 1, the scenes with Tom will be light, as he's singing and a bit silly in those scenes.
So, it looks like they are trying to remain true to the character.

I don’t watch and give this show cash at least, unlike some other posters.

That’s like being an LSU fan since Birth and the AD goal is to destory the football and baseball programs after its successful multiple national championship seasons.

The lifelong fans will start to complain and show their distrust and anger and all you can do if call us miserable and we deserve this misery.

This shite you read on this board these days

Amazon gets my cash because I have Prime, and I'm keeping it. I had it before streaming was a thing, and continue to use it for shipping on purchases. I use it for way more than just watching TV. I have the correct size friction drive cable on the way from Prime for my mower as I type. I'm not dropping the convenience simply because somebody doesn't like some of their shows...and by the way I thought people liked Fallout, Terminal List and other things they stream.

I LIKE Tolkien. I'd like to see a show done well, it's one of the stories I'm greatly interested in. I don't see any other options in getting these tales. I'd rather they continue this and fix it, than cancel it and we don't get anything. I get bored watching repeats.

edit to add- I don't see the point of having a TV board, if all we're going to do is bitch about why every show is bad. Doesn't anyone want to try to enjoy anything anymore?

Amazon can’t fix this. They should have never be given the rights. HBO or Apple TV should have done it instead.

I gave it a chance last year. Whatever it is going forward is built on that stupidity and by the same people.

This show is no reflection on Tolkien whatsoever. You don't owe it to him to like it or even watch it.

What blueboy said

You had to be so naive to even believe this would be good in season one after all the crap we heard going on.

They managed to even make it worse than i expected. That’s impressive
