While speaking at a live event for WIRED alongside actor Chris Evans for their movie Knives Out, Johnson spoke about the people who whine about "SJWs" in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"If someone's responding to diversity negatively, f— 'em," Johnson said, prompting Evans to nod affirmatively and point. "If anyone didn't like the movie, I'm not saying that's why they didn't like it... It wasn't surprising at all to me, I grew up as a Star Wars fan. And I grew up- I was in my twenties when the prequels came out and this whole idea that it's all been sunshine and roses and suddenly everybody's yelling at each other is baffling to me."

Trying to deflect off on the prequels now.

Rian is ignorant and deceitful. I hope people don't let off of him and Disney for screwing up such a golden opportunity.

Idiots like him think diversity in films is what upsets people. The damn movies take place in space so they're all aliens so of course there should be diverse people/characters/etc....the problem is when they push an agenda that diverts from the story telling that's very obvious.

What this dipshit fails to realize is we don't have a problem with diversity. We have a problem with it being forced into plot points that make no sense just because you want to make a political statement

“Diversity” isn’t the source of the negativity. It is a focus point though.

A goddamn shitty movie which doesn’t follow any of the established conventions of a 40 year old fricking franchise is the source of the negativity.

This is now a common go to to deflect criticism of shite movies.

It's like a few months ago when the director of the latest Terminator abortion was doing interviews talking about how his new movie would really upset "chauvinist trolls" He was already getting in front of the upcoming failure with the excuses.

Everyone talking bad about my movie is a racist/sexist/homophob! How very convenient.

That's pretty pathetic.

He can't accept the fact he made a terrible movie.

Let me be nice about this. F*ck diversity in movies. When I go out to watch movies, I want good story, acting. I don’t check the casting credit to see how diversity of it.

When I(just like most) go to a restaurant, I want good food, service. I don’t call the establishment and ask “you guys have any women, blacks working in the kitchen because that real important to me?”

When my car is broken, I don’t call the mechanic shop and as “do you have any gay guys good with transmission repair?”

When I’m about to buy a house, I want a good, safe neighborhood. I don’t knock on random doors to see if it’s diverse enough.

People like Rian Johnson only preach diversity when it’s convenient for him. His job as an writer/director is to pull emotions (sad, happy, fear) based on the characters and story. And those emotions are universal. So I don’t need to watch the character with the same race/gender as myself to have those emotions. I just need good characters, story. But Rian Johnson is trying to be diverse so his movies can have a more audience reach/appeal so it will be more profitable $$$$. But he ignores storytelling part and thinking that diversity is enough. That’s his mistake. His bigger mistake is not realizing it.

Chris Evans is one of the biggest anti-trumper actors in Hollywood. Doesn’t surprise me that they hang together.

TLJ actually isnt very diverse for a star wars film. Most of the rebellion leadership is female, most of the control room crew is female, and a lot of the big war moments are done by females.

Probably the least diverse star wars ever made.

The old star wars and prequels had plenty of different species making appearances throughout the film, but Rian and kathleen needed to use this film to make a statement about women, so they replaced that diversity with all women.

Kathleen Kennedy even made it a point to call out that star wars would be blatantly sexist in favor of women.

When you focus all your energy on making something diverse you are failing at whatever your job is. Diversity is a natural occurrence in real life. That’s why I always cringe at LSU’s office of diversity emails. Is your only job to ensure diversity for diversity’s sake? So you have zero substance in life. The focus of diversity is honestly one of the biggest virtue signaling efforts today and needs to stop because it is insulting to all races.

I get where you're coming from but it misses the mark a little imo.

If you went to a restaurant and it was nothing but black servers, there's a good chance if you're a white male in the south, you're not going to go back. I had a guy we did some work for about a month ago and we were about to go to lunch and he says "you know I used to like going to that Chedders place, but then it started being all n******". That place seriously closed down because of that. TGIF was the same way, I went into TGIF for the first time a few years ago and there wasnt another white person in there, or at least it seemed that way. That place was closed down not long after that. Both of those places are in extremely high traffic areas where a lot crappier places have been open for a ling time.

It's not like this, or a server is some high;y regarded job where the people are making millions and you have a legit reason for it to bother you. Nobody cares about the race of the person working on their car, but a ton of people care about the race/gender of the star that is in the movie they are paying to see and especially one that they grew up loving. And admit it or not, that gets hated on a lot more in the south than it does any where else.

That being said, I didnt like TLJ. I saw it opening night and walked out thinking well that was a pretty big let down and about how stupid some of the scenes were. It wasnt until I got on tigerdroppings that I saw the huge SJW complaint. I had given zero thought to it until then. I thought it sucked because it sucked, not because of SJW's. But seeing is that there have only been a handfull of black actors/actresses that have won an academy award for best actor/actress tells you that they might not be getting a fair shake and if you were black, I can see you wanting more black people starring in movies. Or any other non white race/gender for that matter.

That also being said, im not trying to change your mind. And the SJW stuff bugs me a lot more than it used to. A lot more. Especially the gay angle. Throwing a gay person in there just to throw one in there is ridiculous.

Not arguing with you, just wanted to make a counterpoint.

Johnson is a tool and he's been nothing but a drain on Star Wars, but fans claiming that aliens count towards diversity is just fuel for his argument. Having Jawas and Hutts doesn't make up for a lack of Asians or women. A better response to his bullshite would be that Lucas began to address the lack of diversity as soon as he received push-back after the first film. Lucas was hit and miss with his diversity characters, but the fans supported those who actually added something to the franchise. Hiding behind diversity when you've produced a shitty movie does more to hurt the diversity cause than to help it.

If someone's responding to diversity
He just throws up his liberal catch phrase shield. It's what they all do.

Every person in that movie could have been a white male and it still would have been a massive pie of shite.

I keep hearing that he "still doesn't get it." bullshite. He gets it. He's just using the only defense he has, which they've been parroting since the beginning.
