Rewatched Batman Begins last night

First time watching it after seeing TDK, and I must say, I much prefer Dark Knight.
Katie Holmes was absolutely dreadful as Rachel. Her lines were so hollow and empty, and her feisty moments fell quite flat. She just wasn't believable. Maggie G was not much better, but at least she was more believable.
Ra's Al Ghul wasn't nearly as good a villain as Joker. No, I'm not one of the sheep who joined in on the Ledger suckfest. I thought he did well, but I'm speaking in terms of the villain only. Joker is a much more fascinating villain. His love for chaos was truly evil, and made him much more interesting. I feel like there should've been a more memorable Batman villain for the first flick in the series. I will say, Scarecrow was done very well.
I just feel like Dark Knight was much more well-done. It's like Nolan was testing the water of what and what not to do with a superhero flick, then he took the good parts of BB and refined his writing for Dark Knight. For example, not seeing Gotham in the daytime in BB just made the city seem so dark and gloomy and unbelievable. Nolan may have done this on purpose and saved the daytime shots for TDK as a metaphor for the city's improvement after Batman's arrival, but that is unlikely. Also, I feel like the supporting characters in TDK were much better than those of BB. A movie/tv show is only as good as the supporting characters, and I thought Gordon and Rachel were much improved, and the addition of Dent went a long way.
sorry for tl;dr, just my thoughts. I just feel like BB was a learning experience for Nolan, and he took what he learned and refined it for TDK.

TDK has better action and Ledger is sick as the Joker, but Begins is an overall better movie.

I'm not a Holmes fan, but I felt that her version of Rachel was better. In Begins, she was Bruce's moral compass and you could tell she respected him. In TDK, Gyllenhal just sort of put up with him and showed no emotion towards Wayne....not that Holmes was much better. In the end, I think Gyllenhal is overrated and I hate it when a character is played by a different actor/actress.

I had never read any of the comics, only watched SuperFriends as a kid so that's all I knew of Scarecrow.
When I saw BB, I thought the way Scarecrow was presented was awesome and Katie Holmes was better.
I think BB was the better movie.

I didn't have much against Katie Holmes. Her character was your typical damsel in distress, but I commend Nolan and Goyer for not making her some dumb bimbo that is just there for eye candy. She actually is heavily involved in the events of the plot.

BB is great right up until the moment where batman makes his debut
Then it becomes a run of the mill superhero movie. It's still a good movie and a worthy entry to the trilogy. Origin story is difficult to do.

They didn't make him memorable but the character of Ra's al ghul is absolutely the second biggest batman villain

i enjoyed BB much more. felt like it was the better of the two films as well.

I think what you find is that these aren't standalone films. The first one leads you into the second with the revelation of the Joker, and the second one leads you to the third with the humiliation of Batman. It's one big arc.
Trying to portray Ra's in the movie like the comice wouldn't fly for Nolan's world. It would be too over the top that someone in this world can come back from the dead multiple times. So, I get what you are saying about him. But he was there to put Bruce Wayne on the path to being Batman in Nolan's world, and that was achieved.

I felt like BB was more of an emotional, Bruce Wayne story than TDK turned out to be (death of his parents and learning to overcome his fears, becoming Batman).
One of the things I love so much about BB is that I can relate to Bruce on many levels; except for the billionaire playboy thing.

Watched BB on FX last night and I enjoyed the hell outta it. I'd rank it slightly below TDK only due to Ledger's performance. Both films are great, great films.
