I feel like this thread exist so people can prove that they knew a movie came from an obscure original

The guy that started it didn't list any movies that fit that criteria.

quote:

The Departed (2006) > the Chinese departed

The Mechanic w/ Jason Statham > The Mechanic w/ Charles Bronson

Scarface (1983) > the old black & white one

Oceans 11 w/ Clooney > Oceans 11 w/ Sinatra

And I'll say I really liked the new 3:10 to Yuma with Bale and Crowe but I haven't seen the original.

If this were the case I would have said...

The Conjuring
Mr. Deeds
Insomnia
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
You've Got Mail
Heaven Can Wait
and Vanilla Sky

(All remakes that people probably didn't know were remakes but I haven't seen the original to any so I can't judge)

This crappy Hobbit is still better than the animated version.

You've Got Mail was a remake? That's like a 1997 movie based on email so the original couldn't have been very old. Or were they pen pals?

A lot if American movies are based on fairly recent foreign films.

The original The Girl with the Dragon Tatto was better.

Additionally, Mara basically copied evrything Rapace did in the original. It always kind of aggravated me the hype she got for it because she didn't bring anything to the role Rapace didn't already lay out for her.

No. It was a very good remake but the original was way better. It might just be because I'm a sucker for the Rat Pack stuff though

Was Heaven Can Wait a remake? I thought that movie where Chris Rock came back as a fat white dude was a remake of it?

If they were pen pals they would know each other's address. So it would really mess up the story.

Remake of a warren Beatty movie. The original one is awesome so I doubt the remake was better (I did see it).

There probably aren't too many remakes that are better than the original because if a movie is going to be remade, that means it was probably really good in the first place and the bar has been set high.

The Beatty movie actually was a remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan.

Can't agree. While I liked the one with DeNiro and Nolte, the original was pretty damned creepy. Especially for its time. Robert Mitchum is a sinister dude.

The original Oceans 11 must have been horrid then because the modern one is flaming garbage. Permanently removed me from the Soderbergh bandwagon I was on

I opened this thread praying I wouldn't see someone say The Great Gatsby. I get irrationally angry when I see the remake on my HBO guide. It was so terrible, and why they made a 3D version I'll never understand.

As to the original question, I enjoyed the True grit remake better than the original mainly for the subtle humor of the Coen brothers. I often times found myself the only one in the theater laughing. Both versions are great though.
