It has probably been done here but I did a search and couldn't find it. My kids and I have been rewatching these to prepare for the new one. I thought we could rank these movies. Here is what I have.

1. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)- The Peak. Almost flawless.

The following three could almost be tied. It hit its stride, and they know what they are and they do it very well.

2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

3. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

4. Mission: Impossible III (2006)

5. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)- Still a great movie but felt like a bit of a let down after the perfection of Fallout.

6. Mission: Impossible (1996)- It was groundbreaking at the time, but the ones that came later were just on another level and make it feel kind of slow and dated.

7. Mission: Impossible II (2000)- It was not as bad as I remember it. The story was fine it was the style choices that were the issue.

Just give me the ones with Rebecca in them and I'm fine.

I'm with you on these rankings. I want to move MI:3 up (the Giacchino score and emotions/stakes for his wife are incredible), but the stunts and scale can't be matched from the later moves.

Part1 doesn't have the same heart and I'm sure they'll kill some of his team in part 2 just because...

1. Fallout
2. Rogue Nation
Those two are almost interchangeable to me, I'd give Fallout the nod due to Cavill.
3. Ghost Protocol-Would be up there with the top two if the head villain didn't suck.

4. Mission Impossible 1-Dated, but was outstanding at the time and still a great story with a great cast

5.Dead Reckoning-Solid but mildly disappointing from my expectations due to how awesome the previous three were.

6.MI 3-Not really a fan of this one. PSH was solid, but a not a great story overall, particularly the cheese of the ending with his wife.

7.MI 2-This movie is straight up garbage.

It's a weird franchise where the later sequels were better than the earlier movies.

the Giacchino score

This is a joke right? That score was embarrassingly bad and the worst in the franchise. It was like a cross between a made for TV movie score and an N64 video game.

I mean yeah, he did all those things too: Lost, Medal of Honor, etc.

Ethan and Julia, Bridge Battle, Reparations are great tracks. But it’s the same sound he has for everything.

4 - Ghost Protocol
6- Fallout
7- Dead Reckoning
5 - Rogue Nation
3 - (hate to rate it this low… PSH is still the best villian)
1 - totally a different movie. I was too young to really appreciate it
2- John Woo hot garbage.

Bummed about Rebecca's fate

My wife is convinced she’s still alive.

Anytime anything with her comes out and my wife will always go. She HATES SYFI and willingly went to Dune.

I’m fairly confident she has some lesbian feelings for her and I don’t blame her.

I just rewatched Dead Reckoning. It’s better than when I first saw it. Atwell’s character is great.

I would go

Fallout
Ghost Protocol
Dead Reckoning
Rogue Nation
3
1
2

Two and One are just so different stylistically from the rest.

I liked MI: Rogue Nation the best. I felt the villain was very believable. Rebecca Ferguson was a great addition. So my rankings:

MI: Rogue Nation
MI: Fallout
MI: Ghost Protocol
MI: Dead Reckoning Part 1
MI 3
MI 1
MI 2

Rogue Nation and Fallout could be 1A/B. I give the slight nod bc of the introduction of Elsa Foust. Ghost Protocol began the insane stunts. The storylines starting to stay connected. Dead Reckoning was a letdown bc there were things not fully fleshed out and hopefully the last movie fills in those gaps and answers the questions. MI 3 was good and enjoyed it but not very memorable for me. MI 1 I did not enjoy fully when I first saw it but has held up better over time. Good 90s action/spy movie. MI 2 was abysmal. Only good thing about that movie was Thandie Newton. Everything else was crap. Especially the slow mo wrestling style fight scenes and Tom Cruise long hair flowing in slow motion shots.

You'll miss nothing skipping the second movie, but there are a decent amount of callbacks to the first movie, particularly the first reckoning movie.

2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

This is my Saturday afternoon Shawshank of the series... No convoluted story, just rewatchable. The Temple of Doom MI. Definitely top 3.
