Question for Big Bang Theory fans

If someone doesn't like the show, do you tell them "they probably just aren't smart enough to get the jokes?". I find this incredibly ironic because the show is so vanilla and there is hardly any wit to it at all, imo. It seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator and it's an awful show to me. It has zero creativity or cleverness to it.
HAHA he called sex coitus again!! Listen to the way those guys talk about video games and comics, what goofy nerds!! Just doesn't do it for me.
And I know a lot of people who love the show, including some of the smartest people I know. So maybe it's just not for me and that's fine. But please don't tell me it's because I don't get it

It is because you don't get the jokes but it has nothing to do with being smart. Tons of the humor is based on pop culture / sci-fi / nerd humor. If that isn't your cup of tea then of course you won't like or get the jokes.
My step dad loves the show which shocks me because he knows ZERO about sci-fi / nerd / geek / pop culture.
He watches almost no tv and I doubt he has ever seen Star Wars or Trek.

I love the show, my friend hates it. I think it's because she doesn't get the jokes myself.

This shouldn't shock you, that is one of the major audiences for this show. This show doesn't really require that much knowledge of any of those topics. It is just a theme they use for the show more than anything.

You're missing the jokes made for smart people. It's like watching Shrek. The kids laugh at Shrek blowing up a frog like a balloon. The adults laugh at sexual innuendos and jokes slipped in for adults. In this case, you're on the kid level, we're on the adult level

I used to hate it. Then we had all the re-runs being dvr'd and my wife would have it on when I got back from work and we'd end up watching the show almost every day to fill up the afternoon before dinner. It's not a great show, but it isn't bad. The premise is stupid in the same way that there were a bunch of sitcoms with fat guys with incredibly out of their league wives. This is just a nerd spin on it. Sheldon does have a comedic timing that works. A lot of his jokes are stupid, but it certainly helps to corroborate his personality on the show, so that every once in a while, something he does is really funny. Kind of that whole "I cant believe HE would do that" factor.
I'm an engineer and although the comic aspect is out of my spectrum, the science stuff is certainly not intended to be "smart" humor. Its just the backdrop. No hidden jokes that i know of an I'm slightly familiar with some of the physics.

John Ritter died. She needed a show. This was it. We watch. We have a 4 year old. I know all the points at which to change the channel for non child approved humor.
It is a poor mans Friends at best, but still good enough for me to watch. And Penny is a poor mans Racheal.

I think it's a pretty boring show.
Just a series of one-liners that are supposed to be funny, just doesn't work for me.
