As announced some months ago, Rami Malek will be playing lead singer/frontman Freddie Mercury.

He will be joined by fellow "The Pacific" cast member Joe Mazzello as bassist John Deacon.

Ben Hardy will be playing Roger Taylor, the band's girl magnet drummer.

And finally, Gwilym Lee will be playing Brian May, the band's lead guitarist.

Bryan Singer is directing. I'm super stoked about this film. I have been stoked since they announced back in 2009 or 2010 that a Queen biopic was finally in the works. They start shooting in the fall with a release date set around Oscar Season 2018. I can't wait.

It's still a fricking shame Baron Coen won't play Mercury. He would've won an Oscar. He would have actually become Freddie. It goes down as an all time Hollywood what if

Rami will do a good job, but this movie will suck..

Sacha Baron Cohen said he dropped out because he wanted to do a Freddie Mercury movie with him dying at the end. Queen wanted a movie about them and how they survived as a band after his death.
Cohen told Howard Stern "Nobody wants to watch that shite."

Such a shame. I heard Disney owned it and didn't want it to be rated R

The only movies you could do about a band that wouldn't be Rated R have already been done: Jem & the Holograms and Country Bear Jamboree.

I was supremely bummed when Cohen dropped out. He truly is the only person who would do the portrayal of Freddie Mercury justice. He's absolutely right about no one wanting to see a film about the band after Freddie's death. That's like doing a Journey movie and taking it all the way to the Filipino kid singing lead.

He'll always be the kid from Jurassic Park to me.

According to Brian May, Cohen's comments about the plot of the film were inaccurate. I personally never believed they were stupid enough to have Freddie Mercury die in the middle of the film. As far as I know, the plot remains the same as it always has. The film starts off just before the release of Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 and climaxes at Live Aid in 1985.

Honestly - he's gotten a little too old - he is about perfect for "at the end Freddie" right now - but it would be harder for him to pull off younger Freddie.

Overall, I agree with you, though. Almost seems like he was perfect for the part - if only they could have gotten it going 7 or 8 years ago.

Why wouldn't it climax at the Queen show in Wembley in 1986? I guess it would be repetitive over Live Aid and that was the bigger event, but still.

Sounds like Cohen just didn't want to do the film. I doubt that all of his reasons were valid.

And Isla Fisher is too hot for that ugly frick.
