But did they really?

They didn't. There never was a draft of the script which had Freddie die in the middle of the film. Cohen was booted from the project unceremoniously and he was throwing shite on the film because he was angry about it. Bryan Singer, the film's director, and Anthony McCarten, the screenwriter, have both gone on record saying the film begins just before the formation of Queen and climaxes with Queen's appearance at Live Aid in 1985 (six years before Freddie Mercury's death).

I read a review of the script and apparently the film begins in 1991, just after Mercury's death, with the main plot of the film being told by Brian May in flashbacks.

Also....Lucy Boynton has been cast as Mary Austin - Freddie Mercury's one-time girlfriend/soulmate. For those of you who don't know the story of Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin, the two dated in the 70s and very nearly married. Then Freddie came out to her and their dating relationship came to an end. The two remained inseparable, however, as Mercury would describe Austin as the love of his life. He was godfather to her first child. Upon his death, Austin was awarded his house and the majority of his estate. To this day she remains the only person who knows where his ashes are buried.
