Without south park what does comedy central have?

Could be worth it for that factor alone. They air reruns all the time.

South Park
The Office
Seinfeld
Parks and Rec

Pretty much every day/afternoon is literally filled with reruns of those four shows. That's about it.

Do they even have original programming anymore outside of South Park and The Daily Show?

Totally agree. That is a big chunk of cheddar for 50 episodes of south park

I'm sure the deal includes the library and the licensing

The deal includes everything. Paramount gave Matt and Trey a "handshake" deal worth 2 bil over 10yrs.

Skydance, who is completing a merger with Paramount, rejected that deal because they felt 10 yrs was too long to be tethered.

Matt and Try threatened legal action, and the parties negotiated 1.5 bil over 5 yrs. Seems like a win for the South Park creators.

That's cool and all, but after taxes that isn't even a billion.

Love South Park, but they haven’t been relevant in years. Cant even keep up with their stop/start seasons. Do they even do seasons? Seems like they just do a 2 or 3 part special and slap a season title on it. WTF is Paramount thinking?

Also wtf happened to Comedy Central? Does that channel exist anymore?

The five-year deal means the show will fetch $1.5 billion for streaming alone.

That doesn't seem realistic.

As skiddish as Paramount/Skydance are about free speech, it's amazing that they're investing so heavily in South Park.

Weren't they in a court battle over $3 billion for 10 years?

It seems Skydance was able to get out of half the money/years Paramount was obligated to pay
quote:

At the heart of the dispute: a new 10-year, $3 billion overall deal for Parker and Stone that would more than triple the valuation of the current deal that expires in 2027, according to people familiar with the situation. Park County, the South Park pair’s entertainment company, believes it struck a basic framework with Paramount Global on an agreement. “I think that Paramount pre-acquisition was interested in a broader range of possibilities than would have been approved by Skydance and Redbird,” an insider close to the negotiations says.

But Skydance, which maintains that it has approval rights on contracts as it pursues regulatory approval of its merger with Paramount, has other plans. The duration of the proposed deal has emerged as a sticking point in negotiations, with Skydance refusing to an extension beyond five additional years amid a fast-moving media environment in which it’s prioritizing cash reserves.

Networks love animation. It’s much cheaper to produce and captures a wider audience.

Don’t you think this hurts the narrative that Colbert was fired for political reasons?

You mean when the show was well produced and funny before Trey and Matt became lazy sell out hacks?

Is their writing as sharp as it once was? No, of course not. The show will never be what it was in the early years b/c they are no longer those people. They're too old, too rich, and have done it for too long to be at the top of their game.

But much like The Simpsons or an Adam Sandler movie, if you accept they are no longer at their peak there is still quite a bit of funny stuff going on that's worth watching if you're a long time fan.

Great point. South Park is exactly like current Adam Sandler movies. Tired crappy recycled lazy garbage that’s sometimes passable as entertainment if you excuse all the lazy writing and production.

Not true. The existing episodes make up one of the most streamed properties there is.

I can count the episodes of SP I’ve watched on one hand, which sucks, because I’d probably like it.

The guy who gets all mad about that kind of stuff doesn't watch cartoons so they have very little to worry about.

Not really. Matt and Trey have said they're going to ignore Trump. But if they hit on ICE, annexing Canada/Greenland, etc. it could cause problems. They may have made promises to Paramount that we don't know about. Just seems odd that a company set on placating the White House is going to do go overboard to hold on to a loose cannon show.
