My wife was watching the E red carpet deal and the commenters were talking about who Margot Robbie was being sustainable and green because her dress a vintage from some famous designer.

I don't think "celebrities" are any less educated than the average American. I've never seen any data on this though.

Non-franchise films that made $100m+:

Joker
Us
Knives Out
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
1917
Ford v Ferrari
The Upside
Hustlers
Little Women

5 of them were nominated for Best Pciture. Not bad, honestly. That's a huge rate for $100m films to be nominated for Best Picture.

Traditional TV viewership is down across the board. I have no idea what it would do for the numbers for the Oscars but streaming numbers really need to start being reported as part of the equation when it comes to viewership.

Well, duh. A South Korean film won the most awards in the night, there was no drama regarding the acting awards with Pitt, Dern, Zellweger, and Phoenix sweeping the previous four major acting awards leading up to the Oscars and the only films nominated for multiple Oscars that finished in the top 15 in the box office last year were Toy Story 4, Rise of Skywalker, and Joker. The ceremony was filled with a bunch of films that nobody watched or had an attachment to.

Parasite and Jojo Rabbit were the only nominees to not make $100 million dollars in the US. The Irishman and Marriage Story were pushed hard by Netflix, and supposedly hundreds of millions of people have watched them. This year's crop were much more popular than many nominees in recent years.

I agree with you that the lack of acting nominee drama is bad for the show, but based on the group I was watching with, the average citizen has no idea that Pitt and Phoenix had won every other award of the season.

Same with Parasite. 1917 had a 70% chance of winning, according to Vegas. No one knew going in that it would win 2 of the biggest prizes of the night. The average citizen would have to make it 3 hours into the show to get a feeling that Parasite was going to win Best Picture, and I think at that point they would be counted into the ratings numbers.

Were you at my house last night? Because you are spot on.

Wife and 2 young adult daughters watching that crap in our family room; eating snacks, talking smack, analyzing odds, cheering and high-fiving like a bunch of guys watching a football game.

I ran as many errands and stuff as I could to stay out of the house, then went upstairs and watched Thor:Ragnarok on TNT.

wonder if they would do better if they started earlier, like the super bowl.

I actually think the exact opposite. The Oscars are typically held in the last Sunday of February or the first Sunday of March and it was held on February 9 this year. I bet there were a lot of people who had no idea the Oscars were being aired so early this year. Changing the date was a really dumb, misplaced idea that probably played a significant role in the ratings being so bad this year.

I think he meant like should they start at an earlier hour the day they air.

That’s a question that makes some sense, especially with no host opening to tune in for and since they usually do the Supporting Actor award first then the next 2 hours are mostly technical awards.

Starting earlier and doing the technical awards first so the awards that generate the most interest are starting before 9 instead of after 10 EST.

Incredibly shitty and forgettable year for movies

False. A better year than the last two years combined. People just dont care for the Academy Awards anymore. Unless you live in an artsy city or a big city, it's hard to watch half of the ones that get nominated. Hell I live in Austin, really wanted to watch Jojo Rabbit and it didn't even play here. It was even worse the years prior. At least this year there were some mainstream noms like Once Upon a Time and 1917.

Never even heard of Judy or The Two Popes before last night. Most of the movies nominated are for a small percentage of people in the US, mostly artists, and people who still care about movies for things other than entertainment. The majority of America is turning the film industry into what the book publishing industry currently is. Half hearted, half assed franchises that all follow a formula. Escapism. People want to turn their brains off when they watch a movie most of the time, which is fine. Everyone needs that. But most of the ones nominated are movies that ask you to do work as a viewer, ask you to put forth effort and use your brain. Most people dont want to do that anymore.

And not only that, people don't have as easy an access to these movies because of their limited release and terrible marketing by the independent companies funding them. Back in the day, most of the big movies that made money were also just really good movies that got nominated. Hell the first Star Wars movie was nominated for Best Picture. Hell Rocky won best picture It isn't like that today. The market is watered down and Hollywood has changed into only making money. Most, if not all if the big money makers being made today just aren't that great as the ones made in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Look at all the idiots that went to see all of the Transformer movies even after Revenge of the Fallen. There are movies like that every year. People are fricking lazy. So why should people tune into to watch a program about movies they haven't even heard of?

This, I think if the average person got up on TV and started spewing their beliefs a lot of people would get sick of it too. I think it's more of the GA getting tired of being talked down to people who most likely never had a real job in their life

My wife and I(early 30's) use to watch all the awards shows and enjoyed them. But they went to far with the need for having to have a moment/movement and preaching. Im a regular conservative, not some redneck MAGA crazy, but the constant political stuff became a turn off. I want to be entertained, and they stopped doing that. Even if they went back to some form of normalcy, it would take me a while to get back into watching it just due to other interest taking its place.

Well, ratings have declined immensely the last three years after they moved up the time from 8:30 PM EST to 8:00 PM EST. I don't see how moving up the time another hour will help ratings any.

Agree.

Its a combo of people being tired of all the preaching, tv viewership numbers being down in general, and the fact that theres multiple awards before the oscars so we already have a good idea of who is going to win

It honestly has nothing really to do with the preaching etc. its that the oscars are long and pretty much boring.

This is a pretty big turn off to a lot of people out there and is definitely a big part of people tuning out these days

Everyone has nailed the demo correctly, middle aged and older white women, who mostly watch the Oscars.

But this post comes closest to the reason why they aren't tuning in that much anymore.

The glitz and glamour and prestige of Hollywood doesn't really exist the way it used to.

In the old days the chance to see your favorite movie stars all in one place, dressed up in fancy clothes, was a big deal.

It was fantasy escapism.

However now you are bombarded with celebrity culture 24/7 from social media and the news, it's not special anymore.

On top of that you hear all the dirty stuff now, you hear about the drugs, the violence, the sex abuse, and Hollywood doesn't seem quite as glamorous as it used to.
