Lots of good stuff here. I've heard before somewhere (maybe on TD who knows) that Cameron tried very hard to not leak that Arnold was going to be a good guy in the movie

I listed it as one of my 3 most memorable movie experiences on that thread last week. Saw it when I was 12 and was mind blowing !

i was 6 when it came out, so my first introduction to Terminator was the T2 arcade game at our local bowling alley, and the Terminator 2 3D/stage show at Universal studios. The first thing that comes to mind is the sound of the gunfire in that movie. For whatever reason, it just has this different, incredibly bad-arse sound that other movies do not have.

I was a kid when it came out and my uncle got it on Satellite (the old school giant kind) and let me watch it. It was the first rated R movie I ever saw and I was blown away at how cool it was. I remember it seemed like all other kids had seen it too. The arcade game was pretty huge too at the time.

This is an important point too.

Even though it was R rated and a sequel to the darker in tone original Terminator, Arnold was an international star that kids already knew and loved.

Twins was a family friendly box office hit and of course Kindergarten Cop was a massive kids movie just the year before. That’s in addition to Conan which many younger kids had found their way to seeing on VHS by that point as well.

So even though it was R, Cameron still made it much lighter in tone with a good bit of humor and a young star and even in the way it looked visually knowing that kids would want to see it and to encourage parents to allow it imo.

Even though the body count is high most of the deaths aren’t all that bloody and occur very quickly almost off camera as T1000 is running past.

Other than the knife through the milk carton and the security guard’s eye, there aren’t really many that stand as particularly violent of the top of my head. And even then the viewer is more focused on the effects and technology of the liquid metal rather than the gore.

It’s a big reason that it hit the way it did. Instead of high schoolers and younger sneaking in to see it (those were the days ), it was actually an R movie that you’d see families going to together, often multiple times.

It was definite “awesome” on many levels

Yep. It was an incredible reveal.

While Arnold feels different at the arrival at the biker bar, he doesn’t kill them and there is a lightness and humor to it, right down to Bad to the Bone playing, it’s still assumed he is sent from Skynet, not the resistance.

Cameron even went so far as to make it unclear that T1000 killed the officer that finds him when he first arrives. You hear what sounds maybe like a knife, but visually it looks just like a punch to the gut.

We were trained to assume Robert Patrick was the Reese character sent to protect Sarah/John.

Even up the very moment when they converge on John in the mall and they both pulls guns on him, you don’t really know what’s happening.

Until Arnold shouts “Get down!!” it’s unclear.

There were legitimate gasps cheers and frick yeahs heard throughout theaters that opening weekend and even into the first week or two when people realized he was the good guy.

Like I said in my other post, Arnold was now a beloved box office star, whereas he was a relative unknown in the original other than Conan.

Seeing him as a villain out to murder John Conner in 1991 would have been a very difficult move to pull off, so while some may have speculated or hoped something like that would happen, a lot of people were definitely really surprised and excited to see the switch.

It was just a master’s course on filmmaking and promotion.

I don't remember seeing it in the theaters (probably did) but we were on vacation and the Resort had PPV in the rooms and my Dad and I must've rented that movie about 10 times.

Hell, I just thought he was doing a really good job of playing the part of "annoying teenager" - he simply reminded me of most teenagers I knew.

I was just shy of 40 when T2 came out and liked how Cameron used the liquid morphing into other beings like he did when I first saw "The Abyss".

I was kind of blown away when I saw "The Abyss" for the first time and that liquid was doing things liquid is not suppose to.

I actually like T2 better then the first Terminator movie.

I was mid teens...it was awesome, gnr you could be mine, mixed with t2/t2000, and general teen angst, yeah we liked it.

Mix in all the Alicia silverstone Aerosmith vids of the time and you have a legitimate childhood.

IMO, the last of the Terminator franchise. Nothing that comes after is worth a damn.

T2 was peak Arnold and had a great soundtrack. Prefer the original, but as you said, this one still holds up.

Universal Studios in Orlando had an interactive Terminator show that mixed special effects and live action actors. It was tastefully done for several years.

The concept was awesome and it was executed perfectly. Combine that with revolutionary sfx that still hold up today. After it was over you knew it was a game changer.
