Yeah, and Lester freeman was the preacher. Always get a smile when I see the wire actors in something else.

i cant stop watching the opening/listening to the song. so good

What is the song?
IMDB has 121 cast members. We haven't even scratched the surface of meeting everyone.
Are tent revivals still a big thing in South Louisiana?

You have to think back to the nineties in rural Louisiana. Wouldn't shock me at all if tent revivals were popular in some places.

Liked the show, but have to watch it again as I know I missed a good bit of info and dialogue as I was multitasking. So far the only complaint I could have would be a little too much of MM's characters long sermons, it was almost like it was trying a little too hard. But I really liked his character as well.
Some of the other complaints I have seen on here are ridiculous
Look forward to next week.

Rust isn't the killer, but the crimes match cases he worked in texas (that were redacted), possibly his daughters murder, etc. They catch the guy in 1995 but the new detectives are interviewing him in 2012 because they think he is a copycat. Notice in their interviews, Martin is in a suit and in a modern office building, Rust is in something resembling prison issues and what looks like a prison office.

i don't think he'll have cigs and a schedule including thursday beer at noon on his day off in prison
plus if he was in prison, he couldn't have kilt anyone

true, but I think the cigs and the beer are also "incentive" you would use in interrogation, because they were asking him a lot more leading questions than they were Martin.
If he isn't in jail/crazy house then he is definitely a suspect to the 2012 crimes.

well that's the whole reason why the first interview with woody talks about MM's character immediately
and if i recall correctly, the show tells you both are at CID
hell now that you have me thinking about it, he has cash money, which means he can't be in jail or in the crazy house. also they mention how he "went off the grid". he's just been living rough

Well Rust is retired and has days off where he starts drinking at noon. Martin turned his law enforcement career into a P.I. sort of gig.

He isnt in jail, he explicitly said Thursday was one of his days off. You dont get days off in jail. But I do think its very indicative of how they are both living now, seeing WH in a suit and tie and MM in what looks to be janitors clothes. Tells me that maybe MM got a little too caught up in this

why would anyone think he's in jail?

I don't think he is in jail, I think it is possible he was brought in for questioning in a much different manner than Martin was.

Rust worked narcotics for years in Texas. Marty's wife asks him about it and he is very blunt with her, almost like he does not talk about it.
IMO, Rust is back in narcotics in 2012. He is working undercover which explains his 2012 look and the "off the grid" comment. Also could explain why they are meeting somewhere different than the CID. And I'd imagine if you have to devote 24-7 to being a fake person drinking heavily on Thursdays would be an acceptable escape from your reality.
NO FRICKING WAY any of the following are the killer
Rust
Marty
preacher
hell, anyone we have met.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never meet the killer. The killer is irrelevant, as I said earlier. This show is a character study disguised as a crime thriller.
ETA just remembered something: Rust also makes a comment about this tape being admissible in the interview room, like there's no way it will be admissible so what does it matter? Can't use an undercover cops testimony in a courtroom for fear of exposure...

Good point he worked Narcotics for years but his records are sealed, good chance he was undercover.
