I think we are assuming a lot just off of one episode.

Great opening episode, I'll continue watching. All I can say is FINALLY an tv series based in La without the over-the-top-in-your-face La branding (hot sauce, we play jazz every day, mardi gras, mardi gras, mardi gras).
Side note - I see this series is already being subjected to the excessive TDKR style analysis from the movie board experts

This is like a GOT thread. 23 pages. Nice

Opening Credits Song is "Far From any Road" by The Handsome Family on their album - Singing Bones.

This is a good point, and probably very likely. The look leads you to believe he is off the deep end, but hes probably still on the straight and narrow, just under cover.

I don't know...he's drinking now, something that he said he normally didn't do. And his mannerisms match up with someone who is pretty white trash.

and he mentioned barbiturates

Rust worked narcotics for years in Texas. Marty's wife asks him about it and he is very blunt with her, almost like he does not talk about it.
IMO, Rust is back in narcotics in 2012. He is working undercover which explains his 2012 look and the "off the grid" comment. Also could explain why they are meeting somewhere different than the CID. And I'd imagine if you have to devote 24-7 to being a fake person drinking heavily on Thursdays would be an acceptable escape from your reality.
NO FRICKING WAY any of the following are the killer
Rust
Marty
preacher
hell, anyone we have met.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never meet the killer. The killer is irrelevant, as I said earlier. This show is a character study disguised as a crime thriller.
Nail on the head.

ETA just remembered something: Rust also makes a comment about this tape being admissible in the interview room, like there's no way it will be admissible so what does it matter? Can't use an undercover cops testimony in a courtroom for fear of exposure...
Was actually about to post something similar.

Damn, I was hoping this thread would be a lot shorter than this one is.
I really liked the first episode. Very interesting and drew me in pretty well. Definitely interested to see where they take the story and how they frame things from here forward.
And it was cool seeing HBO actors. Shout out to Brother Mouzone and Lester Freamon.
I'll have to find time to trudge through this thread and see what people are saying..

Damn, lotta pages up in here, so not sure if this has been covered, but the tv special on the occult mentioned in the episode (60 Mins, 20/20?) was a real reference to something that aired in 94/95 featuring one of the members of the west memphis 3 prosecution. Lots of similarities between the show and that case. Feeling like future rust knows they ended up arresting the wrong guy, under pretty intense local hysteria.

Well it seemed obvious they have the wrong guy in prison since an almost eact same murder took place to seemingly trigger these interviews in the first place. Either that or a copycat.

I don't think he is in jail, I think it is possible he was brought in for questioning in a much different manner than Martin was.
Yeah. I got the vibe that the dectetives we suspicious of him. I don't think he did it though.

Don't waste your time. There is very little legitimate show discussion.

Let me save you some time, most of this thread is people bitching about accents, too poor ex-LSU students, and unrealistic characters.

Awesome. Nevermind then.

I find this funny. People complain that people don't have south LA accents but yet when shows attempt these accents those same people will bitch about how ridiculous the accents are.

yeah clearly they arrested the wrong person. but i got the vibe that rust KNEW all along they had the wrong guy in 95. just seemed like he wasnt surprised that it happened again.

I honestly was really happy with their take on the accents. So much better then the typical dr. john wannabe that Hollywood typically does

Show has its appeal although presenting a former LSU baseball star living in utter poverty was a bit much.
Coco, i went back to page 14 to find this quote for you. The conversation is humorous after it.

Yeah, and they want the audience to be suspicious of rust as well.
I guess my whole point was that I won't be surprised if the show starts to further echo a lot of the issues from the wm3 case.
