further to my own previous comment about tie-ins to the first one: watching it the first run through I actually disliked (at first) the Jennifer Connelly link to the past because I expected it to be a one-and-done reference. But they built on that character sufficiently that in hindsight I really liked her inclusion.

Predictable, cliche, abhorrent realism.

7/10 tops. The nostalgia has this movie way overhyped.

Think about some of the long awaited sequels we’ve seen over the years and just how much of a letdown they were. Especially the ones where they give lip service to the original cast members or shite on the original in someway and try to force the newer generation on the audience. This easily could’ve joined those ranks but didn’t.

so true. Was worried this was going to be like Independence Day 2 but absolutely loved the theater experience. Going to try and see it in IMAX this weekend

So in a lot of ways, Hangman more closely mirrored Maverick's role in the first film, not Ice.

This.

In the original, Maverick was a cocky a-hole who wasn’t well liked by his fellow pilots. It’s palpable when they get to Miramar.

Hangman’s bragging about his kill was almost a mirror of Mav bragging about engaging the MiG 28. They fly similarly as well.

With the exception of Goose’s death, their arcs are very similar.

I'm so tempted to buy this on Amazon, instead of waiting for it to hit a stream (or buy the Blu Ray). Almost did it last night.

I spend that in a drive-thru for 2 burger combos, and I get a lot more enjoyment from this film than a cheap burger.

Physical media is, what, November, right? That's 2 months I can watch it at the house before it comes out. Then, I suspect it will go to Paramount, which I don't have and don't otherwise want.

What's the cheapest/easiest way to buy a digital movie? Amazon (I use a firestick, so that is the base format, I would expect)?

Anyone think Maverick actually dies and it is afterlife experience?

I think that he died in Legend and the original Top Gun was an afterlife experience.

We finally watched it on Paramount Plus...

We laughed even harder at this film than we did at Top Gun (which we found to be hilarious).

I have no room to talk because I love superhero films, but the 80's testosterone "frickin' A Bubba!" military movies always gave me a chuckle (Missing in Action is one of the funniest movies ever made).

I can see the attraction for lovers of the genre. It's beautifully shot and it hits every note like a sledge on a railroad spike. The predictability is half of the enjoyment. The love interest shoehorned in from out of nowhere just ads to the fun. This movie couldn't be more 1980's if it tried.

The glamour shot official photo of Admiral Iceman is one of the most unintentionally great images in movie history. They should hang that in every strip mall recruitment office in the U.S.

Once this hits basic cable, it could be my new Road House remote drop movie.

So what did you find hilarious about these movies? They're not comedies.

Superhero movies lack any sense of realism along with having just as much testosterone. The one you laugh at is based on the real world, the ones you like aren't.

Have you ever been in a command building on a Navy base? There's always pictures like that hanging on the wall. CO, XO, MO, AMO, Command Master Chief, etc., etc. Pretty standard stuff.

There's no comparison between these two movies.

Your problem is you have zero knowledge of the culture of Naval aviation. You have no frame of reference, so you mock what you don't understand.

The fact that you felt the need to dissect and cross-examine my post shows that your problem is a total lack of a sense of humor.

I love when people on this board work so hard at being Roger Ebert's ghost. They try to fit so many "negatives" disguised as compliments so as not to offend, while making fun of both the movie and everyone that likes it. All the while, they clearly (1) really don't know what they are talking about and (2) had their minds made up before they ever watched the movie.

Alas, you be you, Ghost of Roger. You, be you.

You said nothing amusing, you just criticized a movie you don't understand.

Watched it for second time tonight. People who don’t like it, okay. People who think it’s bad… frick off.

This. We watched it last night as well. For me and my tastes, it's easily one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen.

It shows that you’re a liberal douche who would never dream of serving our country. A fake coward that gets his jollies off to putting down masculinity
