I went to this movie last night and the one burning question I have is : Can I please get that 2 1/2 hours of my life back? What a waste!

The sedative was too strong.
I think this is the reason we are to believe, but Yusef did mention that the beauty of the sedative was that it did not affect inner ear. That's why the kicks worked at all.

Quick timeout here:
Has anyone seen previews for Inception within the past couple of weeks? I was thinking about how much money this movie might make, and then I realized that I really haven't seen to many previews for it and that might cuase it to not make as much money.

No more advertising is needed, so why waste the money? Word of mouth and a bazillion blogs/reviews are better than any paid advertising.

So its opening night for "El Origen" at the biggest theatre in El Salvador. There was maybe a whopping 25 people in the theatre. Saw some killer previews for The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Halloween 2. Thats right, the Rob Zombie movie that i would guess is well over a year old. It has yet to hit theatres here. Needless to say, the atmosphere was awesome.
From peeking around in threads it seems the general consensus is that the movie is amazing. It's been a day now and i keep thinking about the movie so thats a good sign. That and i was blown away in the theatre bc i kept asking myself: "how does someone even begin to come up with this story?" I dont know. Still confused on that one. They even realized how great the story was and were like: "yeah lets recreate it as many times in this one movie as we can."
34 pages in i dont know how much response im going to get but i just got to see it for the first time last night so...
Seems that it was made to let the audience decide how to interpret the ending.
How did you take it?
Do you feel that there is a definitive answer?
Any complaints?
Questions and observations:
The kids voices were definitely seemed older when he talked to them on the phone than the little kids faces he saw.
At certain points his totem fell, kind of makes me want to dismiss the "it was all a dream" theory. Which seems to be the cheap way out imo.
He remembered how he got to Saito's. Meaning it wasnt a dream or just he remembered the beginning of the dream and it made it one complete loop.
And THE TOTEM WOBBLED!... not that it matters but i would of liked a definite ending. Maybe just a 10 page thread on how awesome the movie was not 35 debating how you interpret the movie.
Whether it was a dream or not, Cobb was content. I guess the viewer should be too.

I saw it last night as well. It was amazing. The people that are saying this movie sucked are probably coloring in something right now.

There were times when I was like, "WHAT?" but if you stayed with it you could understand what was going on. I would so see it again.

I saw Inception again last night in IMAX(a true IMAX 6 story screen). If you are gonna see this movie again, I def recommend IMAX
I kept watching out for his wedding ring and I think it's possible it was Cobb's totem like someone else mentioned(ring was on his hand in every dream, not on in the real world)Course....very last scene, they don't even show his hand enough to tell if he's wearing the ring or not.

Week 3, Inception pulls in 27,520,000 for the week, and is at 193,348,000 total. Budget was 180 mil if I remember correctly. SO onwards and upwards.

im sure this has been discussed in this 34 page thread but i dont feel like going to find it so ill just ask.
the top doesnt fall at the end of the movie, leaving us to believe the whole thing was a dream. What about all the times that Leo spins it and it does fall?

Can't read all 34 pages, I tried, lol, but quit after 17.
I saw it two nights ago, and really enjoyed it. I can't say I loved it, but I want to go see it again for sure. It was really cool, and there was a lot of really great stuff going on but there were also many things that left me unsatisfied (And I'm not talking about the ending.)
I'll just make a couple of comments/questions and see if I get any answers.
1.) How did they get into the secondary dreams? I know they had this machine that put them into the sleeping state, and allowed them all to enter the same dream. But, once they were in the dream they would break out another machine and hook it up and it would put them into the next dream. How'd they get that second machine in the dream, lol?
2.) There was one scene where JGL was shooting at the snipers on the roof, and the other guy comes up and says, 'Don't be afraid to dream a little bigger baby.' He then blows the snipers up with a grenade launcher. I got the impression he 'dreamed' having a bigger gun and it just appeared in his hands. Was this the idea? If so, why didn't the same character do more of this when he really needed it in the snow scene when being attacked by an army? Also, why didn't any of them do this more when being attacked by the subconscious projections? Or hell, even just for fun, since, you know, they're in a dream. I kept expecting someone to dream up a medicine kit to heal Saito, or to just fly across the room or something, but they never did. Why did they seemingly have to obey the laws of physics?
3.) Limbo. Why did everyone end up in the same Limbo? And why was that Limbo the one that Cobb dreamed of? This really doesn't make much sense to me, but of course the mechanics were never really explained at all, and I think thats perhaps what a lot of people's problems were with the movie. They never even tried to explain how the device worked, just that it did.
Anyway....Nolan's definitely got his own thing going on and he made a great film that I feel good about paying to see.

Why does the top even matter? That was Mal's totem. Only she could know its trick, right?

Nope. Once you handle someone else's Totem, you know what it is supposed to do, therefore, you could theoretically use it. Mal was dead so there was no danger of Cobb using it to manipulate her later. He did that earlier (via the original inception). The totem became his at that point.
I still stand by the opinion that Cobb's wedding ring is the audience's totem.

I would think that it would either be put in place by the architect or populated somehow by the dreamer.

I think the only person who can do this is the "dreamer" or the person whose dream it was. They have the ability to "populate" things or people into the dream but I'm not sure if it's as easy as doing it on demand with results 100% of the time. It probably takes some training/effort/luck/skill whatever to just populate things into their dreams.

Best explanation I've heard is that Limbo is just a shared state of consciousness to everyone so they'll all naturally arrive at the same place since they're in the same dream sequence or whatever you want to call it.

It just would've been nice for someone in the movie to have mentioned that this step was necessary.

I dont think so. I don't remember the reason they said, or if they clearly did, but the guy with the grenade launcher is the one who changed into Tom Berenger. He also changed into the Blonde Chick from the hotel dream.

I can go along with the shared consciousness just fine, but that wouldn't explain the Limbo they arrive in being the one Cobb and his Wife spent 50 years in from some other time connected to some other dream machine. The Limbo they went into during the Fisher job should have been a new Limbo that exists only during that one episode/session of that machine running. At least, thats how I see it. Otherwise there would need to be some subconscious connection between all people (which I'm not necessarily saying doesn't exist, but for the purposes of the movie they never mentioned it) that we could all potentially fall into.
Anyway...I guess my biggest complaint is just that they don't ever really try to explain the mechanics of the systems they invent. There are some rules they try to explain, but as mentioned many times above, there are many inconsistent/unclarified moments throughout the movie.
