Being the nerd that I am, I've already seen it twice...midnight last night, five tonight. I can honestly say I was more blown away by it tonight...could've had something to do with the fact that I wasn't sitting in the third row like last night, but no way.
I honestly believe this movie will hold up as a classic. Ledger will go down as one of the top two villains of all time. He should win the Oscar because he was better than Bardem last year, and that's saying a lot.
We can all make little nit-picky comments about this and that, but I think it's what everybody was hoping to see...a dark Batman, an incredible story, an all time performance that lives up to the hype, and a completely awesome movie experience.
I think I've got one more viewing in the theater...

Spoilers.....
I would assume so. I doubt he is dead. I also loved when Batman dropped him and he was laughing on the way down because he thought that he succeeded in getting batman to drop his code of ethics only to be brought back up.
I also don't know if Two Face is actually dead or not. He may be in the next one.

so what exactly happened to the joker at the end? did the swat team arrest him, off him, what?

Well I would assume he somehow pulls through, since he was a factor in later works. Unless of course the other series of films are not canon to these.

Yeah. I just don't think the Two Face character was given enough time. I think he is still alive, but just locked up/hidden somewhere from the public.

Just got back from seeing it. Overall it was a very good movie. I now wish I hadn't spoiled myself prior to seeing the movie--I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
Hats off to the writers as this was one hell of a plot with complex characters and moral delimas galore.
SPOILER ALERT...
I don't think Eckert is dead, but in the movie reality he should be from that fall he took. IMO they should have saved him more for the next one. I also think his transformation happened pretty quick from good guy to bad guy.
Ledger was oustanding. Highlights for me were the pencil trick, the "why so serious?, Lets put a smile on that face" monologue with the gangsters and his final scene with Harvey in the hospital.
Oldman and Cane added some depth and humanity to this movie that you usually don't see in comic book movies. Gyllenhall's character was a mere plot device.
I fear they have no where to go with this franchise but down after this one. and that is a compliment to Nolan and writers.

SPOILERS
Well you start to see the transformation when he has the joker's man in the tunnel and threatens him. he was using a fixed coin, but you could see he was starting to lose it.
plus i really two face is dead. they may have buried harvey dent so he can remain a beacon for gotham, but i think two-face will reemerge in later flicks

I gotta disagree. I'm not saying a lot of actresses couldn't have played the part, but she did a good job. Plus her death was a major reason Dent went insane, and Batman became even more brooding.

SPOILERS...
Exactly my point, her character and her death were necessary to move the plot along, e.g. Dent becoming a mad man. That my friend is what is called a plot device. I'm not saying she sucked--she didn't. But her character didn't have much to do and really didn't have any depth--not her fault---it was how the part was written...to be a plot device.

usually alot of movie endings leave me a little pissed off because it just didnt finish off the story well, but i thought the ending for TDK was incredible. especially the way it was voiced over with oldham and bale. very moving stuff

Heath knocked the Joker role out of the fricking park! It's selfish of me to be pissed off that I'll never get to see him perform the Joker role again. I mean holy shite, what a great fricking performance by him. Stole the show completely. Great movie, I recommend it to anyone.

SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Joker is incarcerated.
Dent is dead.
The Joker could have some life left in his character, too bad Ledger isn't around to provide that performance again. (It's likely that they'll bury the character with him)
Two Face served his purpose in this film. He was supposed to provide Batman with an out. He was the one who was going to eliminate the need for vigilante justice... and he failed. He was corruptible. There's nothing else that needs to be done with his character. Batman was the only one who was truly incorruptible, which is why the dialogue between Batman and the Joker with their last scene together was so important.
You could make the argument that Gordan is incorruptible as well, but he wasn't as high profile as Dent and is unlikely to inspire the same level of confidence as Dent would have.

Just got back from watching it. Great movie, but damn it was emotionally draining. I think i'll have to wait a week before going to see it again.
Spoilers
I was expecting for the Joker to untie himself while he was hanging upside down on the chord and fall to his death, especially when he mentioned "gravity". I also do not believe Harvey is dead yet. I think the police have him in hiding somehwere and he will escape for the third film.

one more question...spoilers
Did the joker tell batman the wrong addresses so he would intentionally save Harvey instead of Rachel?

I believe that the Joker switched the addresses intentionally. It was all part of his plan to break Harvey.

spoilers
yeah i'm pretty sure he did. he knew that batman would go after rachel, and that by her dying it would drive dent to madness.

I just got back from seeing it...it was pretty incredible. Ledger stole the show, though. His character was incredible and not once after i saw him for the first time in the movie did I think to myself that was Heath Ledger...he completely transformed into his role and I was literally disturbed by his performance-in a good way.
