don't tell me because I forgot what happens but when he told flint the story about the gold, flint was pissed the 2 men betrayed him. But now that they're both dead, who knows the real story? Max for sure.. But did she tell Jack about Silver's involvement?

I'm trying to think outside of Silver who else knows he was the one who revealed the location and state of the soldiers.

And while I'm at it. Damn those poor Spanish lost their boat and died on a random beach surrounded by millions in gold.

Their story arc was not fun.

Jacks reaction to the shitty proposal from the other pirate captain was genius.

Kill the captain and free the captives on the boat the rival crew would surely kill to sway the numbers was not what I saw coming.

He’s clearly a lot smarter than people thought he was.

on rewatch that's obvious from the first episode. Vane should have listened to him.

I’m going to have to watch E10 now after seeing some of the light somewhat spoilers.

Started my re-watch last Friday and have caught up to the thread. What an awesome show, firmly in my top 3. I have no idea why I thought season 1 started off slow, I definitely do not think that second time around.

serious question: are there no females in this thread? i know this show is geared towards the male audience but there are just as many strong female characters as male in the show; and in fact, arguably more in control than any of the actual pirates.

Eleanor, Max, Bonnie and Miranda are the 4 horsemen of the fricking apocalpyse.

i think.... one of the regulars is a female in here.

I don't remember if Belle posted about it. seems like it would be up her alley.

Man I'm ready to talk about the season finale. Episode 10 and the S3 opener are so legit.

I forgot to post some of my notes from episodes 7-9. Just a few that I don't think were touched on...

EP7.
As always, I hate Dufresne.

The end of the episode was so good. So I remembered that the crew of the Urca ended up getting sick and they were basically dying off from disease on the island so the gold was vulnerable and that's why they went back. But I had forgotten that Silver stopped the two guys on the pier that came back. The end of the episode and him telling the story to Max was awesome. That's the first time you see him actively going behind Flints back, which is a ballsy move. But he's always said he's out for his own best interest and Flint's motives switched from the gold to Charles Town. Silver couldn't give two shits about Charles Town.

EP8
I sweat that was an actual person falling of the mast of the ship Wish I had a gif of that. You can tell pretty early on that the two guys that came back with the info about the gold are idiots and going to risk them getting caught just by being dumb.

I think this is also the first time that you see that Silver might actually have more influence over the crew than Flint does.

EP9
Even knowing that a Ned Stark type moment was coming with Mrs. Barlow, when they were sitting in the office with Ashe and that clock started ticking and she looks over at it and you see some realization set in, my heart beat got a little faster. I think they should have ended the episode with her getting shot. They went on for a few scenes after that. Looking it up, the person that shot Mrs. Barlow, William Rhett, was a real life Colonel in Charles Town and was famous for capturing a notorious pirate.

RIP Randall. RIP the branded black guy. Lot's of deaths this episode.

One of my favorite short scenes of the entire series is when Flint is explaining where the name FLint came from. Just a simple story of a stranger that who wonders up on a ship (maybe his grandfathers ship, cant remember) and then just kind of disappears. "It was as if the sea conjured him up." In Treasure Island there's actually not a ton said about Flint other than how feared he was. Almost a mythical creature himself. I honestly don't know how someone could have ever wrote a better origin story of that name. Pretty brilliant imo.

S2E10

The whole trial was awesome. And Vane’s plan was badass. Just have to dodge hundreds of cannon balls and fight your way out. No big deal.

Flint’s revenge on Peter Ashe was also great. “Her word will be the last word for this place.”

Pretty fun seeing Flint and Vane working together. And it was also awesome once Flint gets back onboard the ship he's just like "Cut everyone loose, we're all on the same team now." And Vane's little nod to Flint when he tells him to keep his men in line was cool...that's all it took for them to basically be on the same team. For all of Flint's shortcomings, being a fricking boss of a leader isn't one of them.

"Ready the guns. Full compliment."
"What’s the target, captain?"
"Whatever’s left."

Poor Silver. But he endeared himself to the crew so much he’s now voted quartermaster. But he’s still on his wit to switch up the lie about the gold yet again.

“Would you like to see something shiny?”

What a great fricking episode.

S3E1

Black. Motherfricking. Beard. What an awesome introduction to one of the most known names in history.

"You calling my sister a liar?"
"If you're here, there are at least three things she's lied to you about."

The whole setup with Flint's crew boarding the derelict ship and it being a trap set by Hornigold was great. I really, really enjoy the naval strategies on this show. There is just so much shite to it that I would never think about, with how winds work, how ships work, how they navigate, etc. I just find that fascinating. And one thing that stands out is how durable those ships are. Like when Flint turns into the storm's direction, they take multiple hits from Hornigold's cannons, but as long as the people can physically dodge being hit, the ship is more or less fine and can just be repaired on the go. It's not like a cannon ball hits a ship and it sinks, which I guess is how I picture it in my head sometimes. Just crazy considering they are made of basically all wood and rope.

Ole Eleanor getting a pardon? Seems like the whole "Eleanor going to London and back" thing was contrived a bit and unnecessary. But after all Vane has done for her, she still hoes him out and gives his name to the new governor.

S3E2

For all of Eleanor's bullshite, she still looks good though, and watching her bathe was fun.

One thing she doesn't lack is confidence in the face of men though. She straight told Woodes Rogers what was up when he threatened to ship her arse back to London.

So we learn that Eleanor is the one who banished Blackbeard from Nassau, with the help of Vane. Yikes.

I love that Jack basically bought a giant party house full of booze and whores in the middle of town.

Blackbeard forgiving Vane so easily feels....disingenuous. But we shall see how that goes (I honestly don't remember outside of Blackbeard's total fricking badassness in one particular scene). Him talking shite about how pussified Nassau has become was pretty funny though.

Man, that scene with Muldoon being trapped with the water slowly rising was brutal. It's been a rough fricking week for Silver. I don't get why they were trapped down there though...did the door to their room close on accident and then get trapped by debris or something? I think that was what they were showing, but it was hard to tell.

I know the show portrays Flint as some brutal madman who sacrifices his crew at his own pleasure, but I think he really did make the right calls with losing Hornigold in the storm, and then cutting the topgallants. He did kill some crew by doing that, but he also saved the ship and everyone else though.

I don't know how many of those black pearls are in Nassau, but that is a metric shitpile of gold and those pearls may not always keep their value. I'm not sure Max's plan is the right move or not. And neither is Jack.

So many high points in season 2.

-Flint successfully regaining his captaincy.
-Billy exposing that traitorous bastard Dufresne
-The rise of Silver
-Everything at Charlestown. I’ll be honest, I always hated Mrs. Barlow and I’m glad Ashe’s man was so trigger happy.

MVPirate: Jack mf’n Rackham

-Winning his first prize as Captain
-Securing the Urca gold
-Successfully negotiating a relationship with Anne AND Max

Runner Up: Charles Vane

Time to start season 3 and the arrival of the GOAT, Ray Stevenson, rest in peace sweet prince. His death last year was a huge loss.

I'm exactly where you are right now. I took a detour last week and binged 3 body but I'm caught up.

Definitely looking forward to this season. It's interesting how almost nothing goes according to plans for anyone on this show.

The Charles town rescue was a bit contrived on rewatch but still a fun scene.

You really see how much Flint is in character this season and you can see in his face he's simply turned off the part of him that is human to pillage and kill without remorse.

Jack still being led around by a whore.

I do remember a certain scene with him later in the series when he's in a civilized town that I'm looking forward to.

Yeah she was a solid character because she influences Flint so much, but I couldn't stand her.

I do, however, appreciate her willingness to get naked and bang any dude that can help her though.

Yeah he is definitely different this season for sure. More...determined maybe? Definitely more cold. But his sort of home base emotionally (at least partially) is gone now, so it makes sense.

And like someone said, you can tell the writing is different this season. And not really in a bad way either, just different.

There are several scenes I am looking forward to.

Definitely was badass. I think it was technically Billy's plan.

Ashe's little pep talk to Flint right before the trial was so lame. "You don't have to do this in front of everyone, we can do this tomorrow where nobody will see" or some BS like that. O wow, thank you Peter Ashe, my old buddy, who's man just blew my ride or die's head off, for pushing my handing off ONE DAY. A gentleman and a scholar.

This was the first episode my wife decided to actually watch. So of course I'm having to pause and explain things to her throughout which I don't mind. She normally doesn't watch dramas so I just tell her about them as I'm watching them. So she's watching and they've already bashed his leg in and later when they put him on the table and pull his pants up to see how bad it is and the crew gets quiet, my wife goes "O, this is where he loses his leg"

What a great fricking episode.

It really is top tier TV.

Curious what the first time watchers thought of this opening scene/finding out Black Beard was going to be a character.

Same. It's honestly one of the main reasons I like Flint even though he's a terrible person. He's just so much better as an actual captain of a ship. I mean you're just not going to outsmart him as far as strategy. I'm sure the Naval experience is what gives him the edge there. Even with the trap Hornigold set, Flint actually told Silver they shouldn't go for it before Silver gave the order. Which was a little odd in itself the quartermaster giving the order, unless that was a common thing I don't know.

Gave that name up QUICK too. She couldn't sign that paper fast enough. The prison life ain't meant for Eleanor.

Didn't finish EP2 so I'll hold off on that.

Billy provided the diary, but I think it was all Vane as to how it was handled. Turning the fort cannons onto the inner town definitely feels like a Vane kind of move.

Not only that, but they had JUST found out that Ashe was literally the reason things went south for them so quickly in London in the first place. So not only do you lose your ride or die in brutal fashion, but you also find out that the man you thought could be your ally since you have history is actually the one who created all of your problems to begin with.

In a show full of literal pirates, Ashe still managed to be a real piece of shite.
quote:

my wife goes "O, this is where he loses his leg"

I remember thinking it was so cool on my first watch how we get to see how Long John Silver lost his leg. I never read those books or anything as a kid (or an adult), but the whole peg leg pirate thing is such an ingrained thing into that legend. And I just remember thinking how cool this show was when that scene happened. It's really great how they mix in real life shite with fictional shite. It sort of gives it all this gravitas of "legend."

I think that was more of a moment where Flint was kinda trying to teach Silver something about sea life/captaincy. He could have easily vetoed the call and made them continue on, but he left it up to Silver. Now obviously I don't think Flint expected the trap from Hornigold,

And I don't remember, but I suspect we will see some remorse from Silver in the coming episodes about Muldoon's death since it was basically his decision to stop at that ship and fall for the trap. Despite his best efforts, Silver has feelings for the crew and cares pretty deeply for them.

The story arcs really started taking off in season two. You got so much more depth in so many of the characters.

quote:

I always hated Mrs. Barlow and I’m glad Ashe’s man was so trigger happy.

I guess because I'm in my late 30's now and this watch Mrs. Barlow is the hottest female on the show to me this go around I'm giving her a pass. I actually don't mind her character/kind of like her. I'll miss the sloot aspect she brings to the show

quote:

MVPirate: Jack mf’n Rackham

tGOATyrant. Man I love me some Jack.I like a lot of the characters, but he is by far my favorite. His humor/facial expression are the best and it's nice having someone with some actual smarts. Although they definitely built Max up to be some mastermind, which is kind of an annoying come up for a hoe.

quote:

Runner Up: Charles Vane

Which no one ever would have had him this high up after season one. He's probably be towards the bottom of everyones list. Definitely become a favorite character. Honestly don't know who i'd have #2 in the MVPirate voting.
