Apart from porn, I've almost never seen nudity in a movie that I thought was necessary.

Maybe the scene toward the end of "Mildred Pierce" where Evan Rachel Woods gets out of bed nude after shagging her mom's husband...and she flaunts her young nude body in front of her aging mother, but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong: As a guy I love it when hot actresses go sans ropa (ie, nekkid), but aren't the actresses being exploited?

Is nudity ever really necessary in a movie?

Is road head necessary on a 2 hour drive?

no...but it makes the 2 hours more enjoyable.

I get that.

I'm just thinking of it from the actress's POV. I've heard actresses say "I'll only do nudity if it's integral to the plot." What I'm wondering is if it's really ever integral to the plot, or is it just a ploy to get hot women to strip on camera?

Yeah, I'm not sure its really ever necessary and I agree that I don't think I have seen a movie where it is...but I definitely enjoy it.

The nude scene in Titanic was pretty damn necessary to the character development of Rose. She was escaping the norms of her perceived status and opening herself up to a new world and new ideas.

I don't think so. Nudity can be artistic if done properly. Now, I'm talking about nudity in a serious movie. Not nudity thrown in just for the sake of "Awesome! Tits!" Beer Fest has a good example of that when the guys fall over at the beginning and rip the girls' shirts off.

I think it can add a realistic element to some movies.

As someone pointed out, the nude scene in Titanic is a perfect example of necessary nudity.

Well in "The Crying Game" it certainly was more effective than saying "I have a cock."

Right, but she could have been filmed from behind and we still would have gotten the point. We don't have to actually see her tits to know that she's nude and Leo's character is seeing her tits.

Great point. That one is defintely an exception IMO. No doubt about it.

What about shows like Game of Thrones or Spartacus? It seems like they just throw it in there every episode just for the hell of it. Not really complaining about it, but there are times I think it does nothing for the story.

It was necessary in 'Shame'. The movie was about sex addiction so it was necessary to show lots of sex/nudity.

Sometimes it's just thrown in for entertainment but in many cases, it's necessary.

As I said, there is a difference between realism and overdoing it.

Would I expect nudity to exist in a medieval age universe or a Roman age universe? Sure, but they take it too far.

And when they take it too far, it becomes what is known as fanservice.

I don't think I saw that one.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying movies should not have scenes where characters get nude. I'm saying that actually showing them nude, as opposed to using camera angles to imply nudity without actually showing it, is more often than not exploitative IMO.
