I have noticed an eerily similar trend here.

TOOL: great band, one of the best ever; develops a massive, loyal following of fans that become so obnoxious that they create a segment of haters that will dismiss all things TOOL, not realizing they are doing it out of (justified) spite of the annoying TOOL fans

Nolan: great director, one of the best ever; develops a massive, loyal following of fans that become so obnoxious that they create a segment of haters that will dismiss all things Nolan, not realizing they are doing it out of (justified) spite of the annoying Nolan fans

It's the trend, counter trend.... culture, counter culture nature of us as humans. Whenever a group of people obnoxiously praise or dismiss something, then a separate group forms to do the opposite.

I love TOOL and Nolan, but I agree that their fanboys make doing so difficult. I also recognize that the haters are hating not due to bad art from either, but rather from their frustrations with the fanboys. This is why they cherrypick to find anything wrong with either.

I’ve never felt that opinion of Tool. Are people that passionate about Tool? I’d agree with Phish in your reference...expect the part about being one of the best bands ever

Nolan is more like Bon Jovi

Slippery When Wet made him the GOAT
He does really well for 10-15 years

Then sucks salty donkey nuts ever since while his fan boys cream themselves

Nolan has been CONSISTENTLY terrible (absolutely terrible) at two things

1. Editing
2. Sound Design

And the most annoying thing, once something reaches this point, is that you cant have a legit discussion without it turning into "well you're just a so-and-so fanboy" and "well you're just a hater because hes too popular now" type responses

Tool doesn't really have any stinkers on par with Dark Knight Rises or Insomnia in their catalog.

I'll give you my real life example. I was at a Tool concert in the late 90s (it may have been edgefest or Ozfest, one of those outdoor shows in Dallas) and I guess the people up front were getting crushed or something and Maynard asked if everyone could take a few steps back from the stage. This dude next to us looks at me and says "God said to step back so you better do it."

This latter statement is incorrect. The former is probably untrue as well. He’s a good director, but not sure I’d put him in the great category. Almost everything leading up to Tenet after The Dark Knight was pedestrian, though I found Tenet to be an amazing movie.

yup, this sounds about right.

Now watch this thread and see how many people try to go out of their way to criticize Nolan (or even TOOL) and how many go to defend him. It's crazy the lightning rod he is. Every Nolan thread becomes a long list of arguments, and the up/down vote count is usually about even on each post.

He’s more polarizing than I thought he was. For me, the only movie of his I truly disliked was The Dark Knight Rises. I’m not sure what the haters argument can even be. Just cause not all of his movies are masterpieces doesn’t mean they are bad or poorly made, because none of them are.

I can’t believe I’m going to do this but not sure what you’re laughing at. When you actually dig into Tool’s work, they are a stunningly good band.

I've never been a Nolan fanboy, but I do think he's good at his craft. And I appreciate his approach to filmmaking in that he always seems to be trying to do shite that nobody has ever really done before, and trying to push the boundaries of his industry. I think that's pretty commendable. And the fact that his movies are so enjoyable makes him even better for me.

But think about how different these movies are, from a plot and filmmaking standpoint, and how much they not only pushed their respective genres forward, but the industry as a whole:

Memento
TDK
Inception
Interstellar
Dunkirk
TENET (haven't seen it yet, but it seems like another attempt at something new)

Sure, they aren't all masterpieces (don't tell OML), but they are all entertaining and (for the most part) interesting. And I think having a positive opinion of him is okay and doesn't deserve the "fanboy" title.

Nolan is to movies as Backstreet Boys is to boy bands.

Backstreet Boys: great boy band, one of the best ever; develops a massive, loyal following of fans that become so obnoxious that they create a segment of haters that will dismiss all things Backstreet Boys, not realizing they are doing it out of (justified) spite of the annoying Backstreet Boys fans.

Nolan: great director, one of the best ever; develops a massive, loyal following of fans that become so obnoxious that they create a segment of haters that will dismiss all things Nolan, not realizing they are doing it out of (justified) spite of the annoying Nolan fans

Main reason I'm a fan and will go see his movies in the theater
