Software specialist Synamedia is touting a new technology that it says can track down users who share accounts and passwords for streaming services such as Netflix. The U.K. based firm is showing off the software at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The technology, it says, “combats the rapid rise in account sharing between friends and families, turning it instead into a new revenue-generating opportunity for operators.” The Credentials Sharing Insight software could have a major impact. Synamedia cites statistics from media research firm Magid, which say that 26 percent of millennials share passwords for video streaming services.

Netflix should tread carefully with this. Could end up losing customers.

Cable companies will be the ones to use it.

With that being said, Netflix knows people share accounts. That’s why it allows us to have like 5 profiles.

Netflix has explicitly said they're OK with it. Of course that could change at any time...

the only "customers" they'll lose are freeloaders that already aren't paying.

The account holder that's giving their password out to everyone isn't going to cancel because of this.

Yup. That's why you can only stream simultaneously on 2 or 3 screens at a time at the basic level.

I do find it shocking that Netflix and other streaming services haven't put an end to the sharing of login info.

Maybe Netflix's longterm plan is to give as many people as possible access and then once they have peak viewers, put an end to it and hope people are hooked enough to buy.

Seems like they've been able to do this for a while. At least to some extent considering every time my kid gets on Amazon Prime Music, it kicks me off.

No dummy.

Think I can have up to 4-6 on my account streaming at one time with UHD pkg.

It's 4 (I just checked my account). Can also download shows on 4 devices.

I doubt Netflix would get involved in this for that reason. They clearly expect and allow sharing of account information.

Amazon Prime allows you to link a family account as well, though I think it may be limited to 1 or 2.

I don't know about other streaming services though.

pretty sure netflix admitted they were fine with this when they created different viewing accounts once you're logged in.

If I pay for the service, I reserve the right to authorize who I see fit to use my credentials.

It's not like I'm charging them a subscription fee.

*THREAD HIJACK*

Speaking of netflix, is there some way to disable the auto-play thing it does? I can't land on a show for one friggin second before it starts either playing a preview or sometimes will just launch right into starting it. It's annoying as shite.

That's bullshite. Try doing that with Hulu and see how quickly they slap you down.

Not sure how "new" this software is, since the companies already have the ability to limit the number of remote users for each account.

Agree.

Not like you can stream more than your allotted amount.

Guess this is to put some equation together to show how many times users on the same account log each other off due to the exceeding allotted amount. This can then give you a number of "account overload" which means possible lost subs.

Right. It would be like Cox Cable not allowing people who don't pay the bill to view the TV at my house. Or Barnes and Noble not letting me lend books to friends.
