He also claimed behind the scenes that after the fifth season, D&D moved further and further away from the template he had given them to complete the show.

"George would fly to New York to have lunch with [former HBO CEO Richard Plepler], to beg him to do 10 seasons of 10 episodes because there was enough material for it and to tell him it would be a more satisfying and more entertaining experience," Martin's agent Paul Haas says in the book.
According to Haas, Martin also reportedly worried that HBO wasn't "following his template" in terms of plotting out the story. "George loves [Game of Thrones showrunners Daniel Weiss and David Benioff], but after season five, he did start to worry about the path they were going because George knows where the story goes. He started saying, 'You're not following my template.'"
Game of Thrones' final season includes multiple shocking turns, particularly for Daenerys Targaryen. Many fans likewise expressed disappointment with how other major plots were resolved, including the ultimate winner of the Iron Throne and the battle with the Night King.

Does he though?
Season 5 covered content from the last couple of books and the little bit of content GRRM had from The Winds of Winter.
You can’t be upset that D&D started to diverge at that point when you STOPPED frickING WRITING CONTENT.
GRRM could have easily remedied this by, I don’t know, finishing the story so they’d have content to adapt. At the time of Season 5, A Dance of Dragons had been out for 4+ years.

Wouldnt have made a damn difference for him to finish the story in time/. The show ended 3 years ago and there still is no news on even the 6th book being finished. The 5th book came out a fricking decade ago. AND there is supposed to be a seventh book somehow after all of that.
At the point GRRM realized the show was going to outpace him, he should have out more effort and focus into the show and wrote multiple episodes a season. Instead, around the 5th season he stopped writing even the one episode a season and seemingly left D&D on their own.

Sounds like his agent/editor is putting stuff out there to save the release of any new book (I know not likely to happen ). Trying to keep fans interested in following the storyline of the book rather than just giving up. My take - screw him.

I’ve been saying for a while that D&D more or less followed his outline minus a few dropped and condensed plots. GRRM was probably waiting for the show to finish to start releasing books again as a way to extend the gravy train but when people started criticizing major plot points of his story he panicked b/c he’d written himself into a corner that a large amount of people hated.

he maybe right but its mostly because he didnt really have a template for them past that point lmao.
when D&D did have a quality template to work from in the earlier seasons they absolutely hit it out the park.

GRRM should have just canned the books and took the lead on the show. I guarantee it would have ended better.

He is saying that he provided D&D with the outline of the remainder of the story, and they simply chose not to follow it.
As I understand it, Martin has largely completed the outline for the entire series. He simply hasn’t gotten off his lazy butt and written about whether the characters head honey cakes, turnips or pease porridge for breakfast.
