Director Roland Emmerich

"The Patriot," "Independence Day" and "White House Down."

Yeah, terrible resume for making a movie about Midway.

The official movie poster even says "From the Director of The Patriot and Independence Day".

I mean, if you have to reference 20 year old movies as a way to pump up your director then you have issues.

Will probably have many special effects, a love interest or two and political correctness.

Hollywood.

After reading Emmerich's interview on the website linked above, it sounds to me like it's going to be a military history of the battle. Mandy Moore is in there to draw some females to the movie, but this is going to be a testosterone-fueled movie through and through.

The film will chronicle the six months between Pearl Harbor and Midway.

Let's hope so. I wouldn't want to sit through another love story disguised as a war flick like "Pearl Harbor".

White House Down was not a good movie. It was a low-brow, unrealistic action flick. That's fine for what it is, but the Battle of Midway deserves something better than Roland Emmerich.

Also 2012 Independence Day: Resurgence, which were both unwatchably bad.

He needs to get Ken Burns to be his chief adviser on set and when he writes the script.

I worked with a guy who was stationed on Midway. The doctor had removed his toenail (big toe) due to an infection. Doctor told him to soak his foot twice or three times a day in the salt water. He told me that's what he was doing when the Japanese attacked. He said he ran like a man with his hair on fire but wore his boots (without socks) for the next 24 hours. This guy was awesome.

He ended up being a marine guard at the white house after the war.

I just hope they don't start with a prologue of Pearl Harbor - Hollywood loves to frick up Pearl Harbor.

Just give us some text on the screen for the 2 morons in the theater that don't know what happened at Pearl Harbor.

I'm actually reading a book write now about the Battle of Midway "Incredible Victory" by Walter Lord - it's fantastic and would be worth reading before you see the movie.

It's the US Navy's greatest victory. It will be a shame if they screw it up with Will Smith dialogue Independence Day or historically inaccurate PC - The Patriot nonsense like a Japanese Zero crashing into a carrier and one of the Navy boys looking into the camera and saying..."oh no you didn't! You about to get some now."

It's too important a battle in history to completely screw it up in the modern sense.

“The most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare”

Are you being sarcastic? The Patriot was one of the most historically inaccurate movies ever made. They made the lead character a mix up of several historical characters and through in their hollywood bullshite whenever they wanted. Independence day was filled w/ cliches and horrible dialogue. The original movie is a classic.

To people bitching about Emmerrich, he's a non-issue to me.

I saw the original film in the theater as a kid, and loved it. Still do.

Emmerrich could remake ID and it would be fine... I mean, let's compare Midway 76 and ID for some key scenes:

early peacetime scenes to establish the heroes, show what's at stake, what's at risk- check.

Foreboding presentation of the attacking force as it closes in on our unsuspecting population- check.

Visual spectacle of the attack showing the damage, but some of our key assets survive- check.

Competent dogfight scenes, with clear character identifications in fighters and aircraft- check.

Tense Command and Control scenes, with officers being fed current info, giving us a play-by-play of the battles from their perspective- check.

Good intermeshing of the two above elements, going back and forth between cockpit and CnC effectively- check.

Final triumphant moment when the good guys catch the bad guys flatfooted, and bring down the large carriers basically undefended (let's bring those sons of bitches down)- check.
I want Robert Loggia on one of the carrier bridges , he was made for this.

I don't think you read the article you posted. From the interview:

quote:

Yeah. I don't like really that we in our day and time still kind of are patriotic nationwide. We should all be patriotic as humans and try to figure a way out to save this planet. Right now, politically, it's America against the rest of the world. It's the Muslims against the Western World; it's the Russians against the West. It's become very, very nationalistic in the last 10 years, which I don't really like because that means that there are maybe wars on the horizon.

For me, that's also a reason why I wanted to make a movie about Midway. It's the right movie at the right time because the movie doesn't really, like, talk about politics very much. It talks about strategy, and you realize all of a sudden that mistakes were made on both sides. They're all normal human beings, and none of these people in the movie started the war. Politicians started the war.

For me, that was the interesting part about it. That's why I really tried to also be very honest about how we portrayed the Japanese. If they're not full-fledged characters -- just the enemy -- then I think it would be the wrong movie.
