Netflix to give Warner Bros. films a 17-day theatrical release window...

Theatres are murdered.
Disney already puts theirs up so fast, this is about 30 days quicker.
i feel like theatres will start to do more and more classic movie events and they should.

I'll miss them, but I also won't miss the negative side of them either while watching on my 70" screen + surround sound 15 feet away and not hearing some a-hole talking or whatever.
Positive and negative parts to not having to drive to a theater anymore.

I agree, there are certainly downsides to the theater - prices, bad luck of having annoying/loud/rude customers in the same theater was you - but man seeing a film in the theater can be just a great and different experience that's really difficult to duplicate at home even with things like surround sound, large and relatively cheap TVs etc.

I agree - but the reality is that they are all but dead so I'm just glad I don't have to go back to the VHS quality 20" tube TV experience from 1988 as a kid in return for losing the theater.

Netflix is leaving money on the table if they do this. Future Batman and Harry Potter movies are safe bets to hit a billion dollars or close to it. Amazon and Apple both release movies in theaters. I don't know why Netflix doesn't.

Exactly. People will just wait, but I'm guessing this is Netflix’s goal, and eventually they'll just get rid of theatrical altogether

Even if it's speculation, it's what needs to happen for a majority of their films. Netflix knows that established franchises such as Batman and Harry Potter will do better with an extended run in theaters. However, it's dumb to put the mid-budget films in an extended exhibition in theaters when the majority of us would rather watch it from home.

Agreed 100%. And I say this as someone who’s currently building a 110” screening room with capability for 11.4 atmos right now.

Depends...WB has had an incredible year. Sinners, and Weapons, for example, were huge wins because they stayed in theaters. Sinners kept doing better and better every week. That doesn't happen with a 2 week window.

even if this is the agreement, nothing would stop Netflix from allowing their big releases to remain in theaters for a longer amount of time before going to streaming. Sounds like the 17 days would be the minimum.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they made you pay $25-40 for new movies for a time period too. Disney did that during Covid for Mulan and a couple of other movies.

They will 100% end up doing this like Prime does when it comes out of a theater.
It’s the worst. This whole thing stinks for movie goers.

Released it in theaters too, but they were struggling to get subscribers so I understood why they did it too. Figured they could rope people into subscriptions but the movie just wasn’t good enough for that.
