The last few scenes were pretty political. Netflix had to show
It’s colors at some point.

Do we cheer for America or for the enemy?

I enjoyed it. The footage of the Kamikaze planes diving outside of Okinawa was terrifying. It got me back into ww2 again, asked my fiancé to get me “the world at war” 23 disc set for Christmas lol

Mind blowing footage. I never thought they'd have that much in the 40s

They also tried to make you feel sorry for the french women who were fricking and providing intel to Nazi officers. “Oh no, the poor whore who fricked Nazis and betrayed her own country had her hair cut off and she was publicly shamed!” Boo fricking hoo, Netflix

I took it as them trying to show everyone that when it came to the actual fighting, killing, and aftermath of it that the Allies weren't a helluva lot different than the Axis.

I found that to be a theme of the later half of the show once the Allies started to turn the tide.

British battleship that was hit by several torpedoes and then blew up while men were in the hull was hard to watch.

Good stuff. Definitely were trying to make you feel bad for those women that slept with Germans. Deserved every bit of that though that’s what happens.

one of the GOAT, Navy fighter pilots who shot down multiple, Japanese carriers ... Tom Cheek.

his interview was featured in this series... his son was also the Toronto Blue Jays radio commentator for 27-years.

And some of the footage they show is hard to watch but well worth the watch.

Just watched the first episode, it is fantastic. But I will say seeing the colorized videos of Jewish mothers with their babies being rounded up in the ghettos and knowing what happened to them shortly after made me feel legitimately sick. Those Nazis deserve to burn in hell and feel 100x the pain they caused others.

HMS Barham. I had seen the black and white video before. Somehow seeing it in color made it that much more impactful.

Just got to that scene.

Holy shite. I had never seen that footage and was not expecting that. And it looked incredible colorized.

Through 1.5 episodes so far and this it’s fricking excellent.

After watching two episodes, I'm convinced much of the footage is fake CGI stuff. Some of the scenes feel way too artsy for a 1940s teenager with a video camera and I've seen what the graphics look like on modern Xbox war games.

Just finished this. It’s fricking excellent. Highly recommend.

I agree with someone earlier that said it does rush through things at a lightning pace. But for only six episodes I guess that’s expected. But that’s my only real gripe, and it’s minor since there’s so much to cover in such a short time.

But it’s really well done and some of the footage is incredible.

On the 5th episode where they’re talking about the liberation of Paris. They kind of downplay the fact that the allies liberated the city and instead say it was the French resistance within the city and we just kind of “assisted”

I've been watching this while iced in this week and just got to this scene. I almost spit my water out when the narrator said the allies arrived in Paris to assist the resistance. Jesus Christ

I searched for a thread on this show, and yep I knew I wouldn't be the only one to scratch my head on that part.

Thirty years after the war, the passion, fury, and hatred of the abbey remained with British Lieutenant Bruce Foster when asked what he thought about the destruction in 1944. “Can you imagine,” he said in reply, “what it’s like to see a person’s head explode in a great flash of grey brains and red hair? Can you imagine what it is like when that head belonged to your sister’s fiancé? I knew why it happened; I was positive it was because some bloody … Jerry was up there in that bloody … monastery directing the fire that killed Dickie, and I know that still.”

David Somerville wrote years later in his book World War II Day By Day that the Germans had obeyed the wishes of Catholic and other civilian authorities not to occupy the monastery and had been very scrupulous about it. The Allies, however, were very much convinced that German artillery and mortar spotters were using the abbey as an observation post. It wasn't until after Monte Cassino was bombed that German troops moved in to occupy the ruins. The only people killed in the bombings were Italian clergy and civilian refugees.

It was cool to see all of the color videos, especially the German and Russian ones.

This started me looking for other color videos and the Smithsonian channel did one for the Pacific Theater that has tons of videos you never see on these “in color” shows. Paramount+ has it, or the Smithsonian Channel LINK

Also…Hamburg bombings. 45,000 sheltering civilians targeted and killed on purpose by the allies. That is some f**** up shite

The quickest way to end a war is to make the general populace of the aggressor understand their mamas, daddies, girlfriends, cousins and grandparents are in danger if the aggression continues. THAT is how you suck the will to fight out of people. And in an age of smart bombs and guided fire, soldiers know they can kill others’ families without threat to their own. War is terrible and it sucks, but the quickest way to end it is to destroy the enemy without mercy until they capitulate. That’s how we won WWII, and trying to stay seated on our high-horse trying to protect those people is how we lost the last 3 wars and brought increased death and destruction on others.

Most of the footage is from actual directors: John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens, and their teams. They have a documentary on them as well called 5 came back.

Then if you want to see the actual videos Netflix has Five Came Back: The Reference Films. It’s basically 12 individual films, each one an hour, of their footage paid for by the war department. You will see pretty much all the same videos you see in the Frontlines special (but they are in b&w).

However, one of the big “fake” things they did on some of the WWII films is add sound. For instance, the 16mm cameras on planes didn’t have mics so sound had to be added.
