they have changed the game with the Irishman and it will make for a healthier balance of theater engagements and at home streaming. Giving the consumer the best of both worlds. I don't care if i can watch it on my TV --- still enjoy the process of going to a theater with a shared audience and watching it as intended. And so do millions of people worldwide. That won't change.

Being in a theater full of people eating full meals while watching a movie has never really appealed to me.
I don't even like it when people eat jalepeno nachos next to me.

Having someone's half-eaten salad drenched in foul smelling dressing sitting two feet from me while I'm trying to watch a movie is disgusting.

Plus the waiters scurrying around, people discussing food orders, screw that.

Already here, its a shame. The movie going experience is so much fun, and from a different time.

I think it's past time for this to happen. Screw theaters and their overcharging of everything.

All the money you save on tickets buy a good TV with surround sound. Rather watch at home.

It's just becoming too expensive. If I were a father of two and had a wife, I would have to spend $60 on movie tickets alone. Factor in popcorn, drinks, and candy and you're looking at roughly $100 just to go see a movie on a Friday or Saturday night.

Compare that with paying $7.99 to stream the same film on my 70" at home, where food and drinks are already bought and paid for.

I watched Marriage Story last night, just on a whim because I like ScarJo and Adam Driver. Holy shite. It was great.

Netflix is about to murder everyone at the Golden Globes.

It really is the worst.

Seems like making the action alley of the employees going vertically down the rows instead of horizontally would be an improvement but either way it’s always a distraction, especially if you get seated next to a date that’s ordering food and a round of vodka sodas every 10 minutes like the last few times I went

I watched marriage story last night, it's absolutely EXCELLENT. both driver and johanssen were incredible. I loved it, and I'll probably never watch it again, because it's just emotionally grueling
it's a shame no one will watch it, since it doesn't have any space or lightsabers or flying superhero dudes in it.

Or maybe it’s because “ and I'll probably never watch it again, because it's just emotionally grueling“

But more seriously isn’t this a better format for films like this for now. I just don’t pay to go to theaters wanting to come out feeling like this. Ticket prices and size of screen and sound system should not be the one size fits all for released movies. Releasing films like this online quickly after a quick theatrical release or an art house type of release (or longer & wider if successful) is what will help more quality smaller budget movies be made. Netflix and other similar monthly fee services are exactly where people might check out something that they wouldn’t normally watch much less pay more to just watch once at a theater. If a service gets good at picking ones to release online exclusively and stays fiscally disciplined it will lead to both profits and more quality work.

I know I’m very behind the times but we just got a 60” 4K with 120hz and I don’t really want to watch movies in theaters anymore.

same here. I went to a Sears with my mom once in like 1995 and I saw one of those huge-arse wooden box number where it's like a 25 inch tv inside of a wooden piece of furniture. I asked my mom if we could get it and she looked at the price tag said, "my god that's more than your dad makes in a month!"

idk what that cost but pops was an accountant, we were middle class but it's not like we were broke

I have never really enjoyed the theater experience over watching at home and theater decorum is worse than it ever has been.

I would much rather sit at home in a recliner that reclines to any angle I want parked in front of a 120" wide screen with sound that is better than the best theaters and optimized for the MLP (main listening position). The only negative is the required delayed gratification prior to the movie being streamed.

I completely understand people that enjoy the theater experience but I have done my best to equal or better the parts I like and eliminate the parts I do not. I also know that HT is also a hobby for me which adds an entirely different level of enjoyment to the home theater experience.

I've never used one for this, but how good are the current VR/AR headsets for movie watching?

That could be a consumer device that gains more traction as the technology develops and we see more of these direct to Netflix releases.

I heard Kevin Smith on the radio talking about his new movie and how they’re basically turning it into a tour where they release the movie in each city and do an appearance with it. I think that’s a really cool idea.

Yep. I went to it in Columbus OH. He talked before the movie then did a Q&A afterwards. Me and my friend met Smith and Muse after the movie during a VIP meet and greet. Smith gave me a big hug when I met him. Super nice guy. No matter what people may think of his movies. Guy loves his fans.

Much like ice ages/ozone layer/global warming/climate change, the end of the theater experience sure has been ending my entire life...

I know the exact one you're talking about. My grandparents got that one sometime in the mid-90s and eight-year-old me thought it was the greatest TV ever invented. I fought for that TV in the basement when I was over at their house.
