They have four films this year that are bona fide awards contenders: The Irishman, Marriage Story, Dolemite is My Name, and The Two Popes. I think we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the theater experience as we know it. In the future, I feel as if movie studios will release their mega blockbusters in cinemas to maximize profits while smaller, more intimate films will be released online for streaming.

Already here, its a shame. The movie going experience is so much fun, and from a different time.

Every single one of those would have struggled to crack $100m at the box office and The Irishman is likely the only one that could even come close.

I watched marriage story last night, it's absolutely EXCELLENT. both driver and johanssen were incredible. I loved it, and I'll probably never watch it again, because it's just emotionally grueling

it's a shame no one will watch it, since it doesn't have any space or lightsabers or flying superhero dudes in it.

I liked Irishman and Dolemite. I’ve never heard of “‘The Two Popes”’. Is it worth giving a shot?

I don't know if Netflix has released it online yet, but it's about Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. Critics have seen it and it's been given rave reviews. Anthony Hopkins plays Benedict while Jonathan Pryce plays Francis.

I don't know, man. The Irishman being rated R and also being 3 1/2 hours long would have really hurt its chances at making the $100 million mark.

I heard Kevin Smith on the radio talking about his new movie and how they’re basically turning it into a tour where they release the movie in each city and do an appearance with it. I think that’s a really cool idea.

They had Roma last year which was fantastic. Visually stunning and an absolutely awesome storyline.

Other than Eddie Murphy, I don’t think dolomite will be up for anything. I saw Irishman which was great, and I plan to watch both marriage story and the popes

IDK, I’d argue that there are some chains out there who are adapting really well to newer customer demands. Chains like Alamo Drafthouse and Santikos are doing a decent enough job of offering an “experience” as much as a movie, and I suspect that we’ll continue to see more theaters skew that way moving forward.

Personally, adding on the experience of hearing 50 strangers eat while watching a movie is not an improvement.

There’s certainly a niche market that can be filled by the Alamo types, but they’ve spent 4 decades bending customers over the table on over priced tickets and concessions, to try to adapt now is too little too late.

Oh I agree that the length would hurt it for sure. I was just saying that of the 4 The Irishman is the only one with a chance to make $100m. Even if it could make $100m it would still have a hard time turning a profit considering its budget and potential marketing costs.

Ever been to a santikos by chance? They’re a much smaller chain and I think only in Texas, but maybe they’re the better model; kind of a hybrid of Alamo and traditional theaters. Still have all the upscale amenities, big seats, fancy food options, appealing lounge and bar areas, etc., but they don’t actually serve food/drinks in the auditorium. Once you’re in and the movie starts, it’s the standard movie experience. But the surrounding pre and post-movie experience is buffed up.

Alamo Drafthouse

Being in a theater full of people eating full meals while watching a movie has never really appealed to me.

You would rather watch Infinity War etc on tv at home and not on an Imax Screen???

To each its own.

the movie theater will never end...hell they have released some streaming movies to theaters as well I think.
