Which is funny because that album came out before the internet blogging age.

They had other forms of media before the internet.

Yeah but it was nothing like it is today.

You made it seem that we like NMH only because Pitchfork or Stereogum or the AV club or some other popular indie blog gave the album a high rating. Back then there really wasn't a medium for indie rock to travel other than word of mouth.

Of course there were a few magazines, maybe a dedicated show to indie on MTV, or a dedicated column in the newspaper, but nothing as widely available as today.

I think pitchfork did review it when it first came out. They originally give it a 8 something. Since then they have changed it to a 10.

Rolling Stone reviewed it as well and gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

But yeah, neither of those were that great of reviews. Word of mouth was key in it becoming a cult classic.

has a fitting name

saw this thread, and was going to post this. Absolutely a perfect album.

I would also say my bloody valentine - loveless, and stone roses are also perfect albums.

You could make an argument for galaxy 500 today, but its got its holes.

imo out of all of the albums shoegaze bands put out, Slowdive's Souvlaki is better than MBV's Loveless.

I appreciate your contributions to 80s threads. you and Cable_Guy and some others have been excellent teachers for a young'un like me for lesser known 80s songs.

Thanks Leauxgan Glad to introduce any and everyone to music they might not ordinarily hear. The 80s have a myriad of hits from dark wave, new wave, bubble gum to metal. The 80s just seem to get passed over.

Me?

Good stuff. I wouldn't put it on the same level as John's solo shite but it isn't bad by any stretch.

Personally I think Frusciante's best music is on Curtains, Shadows Collide with People, Empyrean, and Californication. At times Ataxia just sounds...weird. Obviously his solo albums are weird in their own right but there is something different about Ataxia. They tend to be a little repetitive and monotonous IMO.

Ataxia definitely isn't well known but there are several guys on the OT familiar with the solo albums. On second thought I'd like to add Empyrean to my perfect albums list. It just flows so damn well.
