Who do you think would be his champion for him against the crown?? He confessed to being a traitor and against the crown. Who would want to fight for him against the crown?
How do you think that would have worked out for that person?
And remember, with a trial by combat you either win and live or lose and die. And the crown would have used 1 of the best fighters in the realm like the Hound or the Mountain.
And Ned was supposed to go to the Wall. Joffrey had other plans though.

Seriously, even if Ned had a champion and the champion won, he would have certainly had to have fled with Ned, and quickly at that. Cersei and Tywin would surely have seen him dead.

Yep. Even if he would have chosen trial by combat and won, he would have been killed.
And, he also had to think about Sansa and Arya. They were basically captives to the Lannisters. If he would have fought the chargers, they would have been killed. Varys even hinted at that when he visited Ned in the cell.

Ned wasn't a good swordsman to begin with, he had a busted leg, and the Wall was a pretty sweet deal for him.
Ned might not have been a great schemer, but he absolutely made the right decision. At the Wall he'd be able to tell Jon who his mom was

It's not his decision once he was captured, it was his decisions leading up to that.

He confessed because he was told that he would live out his days at the wall i he did so. He would never be more than a couple nights' ride from his wife and children, he would serve with his bastard son and his brother, and he would see his son inherit Winterfell while still being able to give Rob counsel if sought. Plus, he'd be serving under Jeor Mormont, a close personal friend.
The wall really wasn't that bad of a fate for Ned Stark.

He saw what happened to his father?
Also Jamie would have killed him.

Not quite a true depiction of what happened in the books. In the book, I don't think he and Jamie ever went heads up and his leg got crushed by his horse.

Also, Ned wasn't even on trial which is the biggest thing here. He somewhat confessed to "his" crimes so that he could take the black; he wasn't on trial for anything in order for him to request a trial by combat.

The last time a Stark asked for trial by combat, the Mad King chose "fire" as his champion

More Spoilers from Robert's Rebellion and the books. Please delete if spoilers are too much.
quote:
""And now it begins," said Ser Arthur Dayne [...] "No," Ned said with sadness in his voice. "Now it ends." As they came together in a rush of steel and shadow, he could hear Lyanna screaming. "Eddard!" she called. A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death."
After reading a bit more it seems that Ned did not kill Ser Arthur Dayne in single combat, but rather Howland Reed of the craggoman saved his skin and Ned dreamt of the sequence while prisoner at Kings Landing.

Jamie would have chopped his head off which would have been more demoralizing than having a shitty child king order his death.
Plus, he thought he was going to get a break.

No. Sure Howland Reed saved him, but Ned still killed Arthur Dayne.
