From the mutiny we can surmise that he made a terrible mistake in assuming he could do this

Jurisdiction has little to do with theGods. They see it as the most unholy act you can do.

he wanted to be a 'headliner' at the palace?

(fwiw thought my earlier "he wanted to win the pole vault competition" was better)

you could argue he wasnt being very hospitable.

seems like the gods would frown on sacrificing babies to the white walkers too.

Not a chance, Selmy didn't like Ned. He blamed Ned for Ashara Dayne's death.

I think you're wrong on that. That may be an aspect Selmy didn't like about Ned, but he did love Ned for standing up for Rhaegar's children and refusing to have Dany assassinated. He even prayed for his soul in the Sept of Baelor that it may find peace. Plus Ned is the only person that he has defended in front of Dany, when he was called an Usurpers dog.

Not saying he was his mortal enemy, but I don't think he liked him enough to champion for him.

now that i think about it, was there anyone willing to be Ned's champion if that had played out?

Could have been interesting if Jon Snow was someone asked to champion for him.

you know damn well Ned would never put Jon in that predicament.

Ned would never make any of his kids do that.

He'd never ask Jon to do that. Plus Jon is sworn to not take part in that. Hell, I think he'd ask Robb before Jon, and even that's an impossibility.

I know...that is why I worded it "somehow"

It would have been outside of Neds wishes if it had happened.

There are plenty of people who would've championed for Ned. The problem was that they were either too far away or they simply were nowhere good enough and would not have defeated The Mountain that Rides or Jamie in a battle.

One thing the show does a poor job of is letting the viewer know just how scary the Mountain is and how badass some of these knights are such as Jamie, Selmy, etc

Because be was guaranteed a spot at the wall. There was no need for it. No one knew Joff was a sadistic frick at the time. Even though Tyrion was guaranteed the same thing Shea betraying him sent him over the edge and he made a snap decision.

Regardless of Shea I don't think Tyrion had any intention of going to the wall. He would've taken his death over the wall

eh, he already secured friends/allies at the wall from his visit there. it wouldn't have been a hard life for him.

he spends too much time/money trying to stay alive to just give up life over spending the rest of it at the wall.

Yeah, watched last week's episode with some Hodors, and they didn't have a clue who the Mountain was or that the Mountain raped and butchered The Red Vipers' sister and her children.

True, at least they tried last episode by showing the mountain pointlessly murdering people for fun

Oberyn has stated multiple times that the mountain did that. that's Hodor's not paying attention. and maybe they could remember who the mountain was if he wasn't recast 8 times every season.
