I guess the argument would be that if Dr. Strange had told Tony and Tony knew he would have to die, then Tony may have tried to come up with another way, which would have failed.

GOTG2. Why didn't Yondu just tell Starlord his dad was a homicidal maniac. Nothing was gained by keeping that secret.

GOT was going somewhere with that story

But as it turns out the showrunners were hacks and severely dropped the ball

Maybe more so than any other television show ever has.

What a great example. How exactly was anyone’s life better because Ned kept that secret? I get the initial lie, but why keep it for decades? We all saw how that turned out

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the point was keep Jon Snow safe? Robert was clearly paranoid of any heir that might have a claim to his throne...especially with Snow being the child the woman he loved had with another man.

Spin off of this is the rom com trope of someone getting caught in a promiscuous but totally explainable position towards the end of the movie but the girl ever refuses to listen to a word the guy says for 20 minutes of movie screen time because she’s been hurt before

Jon Snow got to oh, I dunno, stay alive b/c of it? Robert sent out assassins to kill a 13 year old girl. He would have had Jon killed too. Did you even pay attention when watching?

Whats even more annoying is when 2 people are having an argument and one person has a very valid explanation for said problem, but wont take 3 seconds to say it. They just pull the whole "No, wait! Ill explain, its not what you think" and then the other person just leaves

THis is my big pet peeve.

And the OP as well, anything where the drive of the plot requires illogically and willfully held knowledge that could be easily communicated.

I actually read it because I’m not a mouth breading moron but thanks for the lesson. I didn’t say he should have sent a letter to Robert saying “Hey the true heir is actually my bastard son, cool thanks, see you at Christmas!”

He could have told Jon who his parents are and told him not to tell anyone, especially once he saw Jon’s good natured character

He could have also told Cat, so maybe she wouldn't have gone through life thinking that he cheated on her.

I believe this is called creating/building tension in the story. Your version would be more realistic but a less entertaining story.

I'm not sure what the plot device for this scenario is called, but I'm sure they teach it in Screen-Writing 101, because they all do it.

The "maguffin" is another VERY common plot device.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Pulp Ficiton
Maltese Falcon
Apocalypse Now
The Big Lebowski
LOTR movies
Monty Python's The Holy Grail
Star Wars Episode IV

I guess all of these need this:

SPOILERS

SPOILERS

Lone Star (1996) immediately came to mind because The Sheriff finds out a girl he liked in high school, and is close to hooking up with, is his dad's illegitimate daughter. The lady doesn't know she's the guy's daughter either. The movie is about racial tensions in a small Texas town. The sheriff is white, and the girl he almost hooks up with, is Mexican American.

His dad never told him, and her mom never told her.

IMDb

ETA:

Crazy part of this movie is Matthew McConaughey being Chris Cooper's dad. All of the shots with McConaughey are basically flashbacks from when he was alive, and messing around with Elizabeth Pena's character's mom, while being sheriff of the same place MM is in the movie's current days.

I agree about withholding the prophecy from Harry. That was kind of a dick move.

Wasn’t Dumbledore unsure about the horcrux situation until HBP?

Near the conclusion of Breaking Bad, Walt reveals to Jesse that he watched Jane die and did nothing to help. I thought this was lame. Vince Gilligan gave in to fan-service. Everyone on Twitter wanted Jesse to find out about that, but Walt revealing it was dumb and written in a ham-fisted and rushed way that didn't gel with the rest of the show, in my view. I hated it then, I hate it now. It's not something Walt would've done.
