I wont correct you because you are right. If that type of secret were to get out, the Lannisters and Baratheons would have come for Jon Snows head. And im talking about before he grew up into someone who you might think could have defended himself against the two most powerful families in the seven kingdoms at the time.

Usually this is an example of poor writing. I hate when they do it in a show and draw it out over a season or two
