Perfect Storm - instant classic

The Bounty - w/ a young Mel Gibson and younger Anthony Hopkins

Dead Calm - psychological thriller set at sea that introduced American audiences to Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill and Billy Zane

In the Heart of the Sea - true story that inspired Melville to write Moby Dick - critics didn't like it but I thought it was very good

And topless womens.

My favorite "at sea" movies.

Captains Courageous (1937) Director: Victor Fleming, Writer: Rudyard Kipling (novel)
Stars: Spencer Tracy, Freddie Bartholomew, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, Mickey Rooney, John Carradine...
IMDb

White Squall (1996) Director: Ridley Scott
Stars: Jeff Bridges, Caroline Goodall, John Savage
IMDb

ETA: A college buddy used to say, "There's a storm a bwewing out there mattie."

Don't know where he got it. I see memes of "There's a storm a brewing", but this was in the early 80's. It sounds like a quote from an old movie like Treasure Island, but Goggle yielded nothing that old even similar. I think it was from a cartoon, because he said it in a kind of a cockney cartoon voice. I stole it, and used it on occasion, when wasted, after I moved to Dallas in 1983.

It always drove me nuts that paper is some crazy rare commodity in Waterworld but then they had the smokers who were literally smoking paper all day long w/their cigs.

White Squall (1996)

Great movie. Super underrated and should be far better known.

Man, don't pass up the one with Clark Gable and Charles Laughton. It's an amazing film with amazing performances.

The Crimson Pirate with Burt Lancaster and, of course, Nick Cravatt as Piccolo. A great swashbuckler with Burt and Nick doing their own stunts.

The opening 15 minutes or so of Master & Commander is absolute classic movie-making.

The Life of Pi is going to be a classic in years down the road, or should I say, sea.

Horatio Hornblower was fun back in the day but it's pretty tough to watch today... VFX and acting has come a LONG way

I wasn't expecting much when I first watched that movie but it turned out to be pretty darn good, definitely better than I expected.

Good recommendation

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

--Great sea shanty sung by Kirk Douglas: "A Whale of a Tale"

Kirk Douglas - A Whale of a Tale

-- Cool as hell steampunk submarine, the Nautilus.

-- Great lines by James Mason as Captain Nemo:

"Gentlemen, we are about to fight at close quarters with the most ferocious of all the sea beasts"

"That is brisket of blowfish in sea squid dressing, basted in barnacles"

Captain Courageous was one of my first thoughts.

Dead Calm is a good pick too.

I like the older Bountys more than the Mel Gibson Bounty. Not because the Gibson Bounty is bad but because the other Capt Bligh performances were so much superior.
