First thing to come to mind was definitely Tom and Jerry. They also smoked and got drunk.

Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing ver very violent anime.
G.I. Joe was violent, but no one ever really got hurt (same with Transformers).
Looney Toons had some serious violence, but Tom and Jerry has to take the cake.
